Now here is one creepy guy. I went with the old lady to see Hairspray, and John Waters had a cameo as "the flasher." I hadn't seen the original, so this was my first experience with the musical/movical whatever it is. Actually, I was impressed with the movie's depth on many levels.
Firstly, the cast was really talented. But realistic, both visually and musically. For example, some of the singers didn't really sound perfect, but were very soulful. Also, the main character is a chunky girl, not a Barbie teen-queen.
Secondly, the whole racial integration issue NEVER COMES UP IN REVIEWS, so how was I supposed to know it was there? But, I'm glad it was. I wonder how few people really did stand up for the right thing, in a time where doing so would land your ass in jail???
The dancing/choreography was really good, too, in my (novice) opinion. There was lots of dancing and I enjoyed it. It wasn't really very cheesy like most other musicals I've seen [Cabaret, All That Jazz, and Chicago not included].
I'm not going to do more then mention John Travolta in drag. I guarantee he is only there to make some $$$, which I find sad and depressing. But, admittedly, it was kind of funny. So go see it, or rent it when it goes to video. I don't know that for this flick, it really makes much of a difference.
