So I did an experiment this evening...I wanted to try rolling the fondant and covering something with it. So I got out the smaller version of the same cake pan, tinted the fondant to look marble-like and went for it. Then I painted some veins with a couple of different metallic powders mixed with vodka. And here's what it looks like:
Cake Experiment
The vase is something the bride found to put on top instead of a traditional topper...she wants the cake to look like a fountain, so I'm getting some florists foam and some 16 guage aluminum wire to simulate water spraying out of the vase.
I'm very excited...so far everything that I've tried has turned out like I expected. I ended up deciding to pipe the monogram in royal icing. I played with that last night and figured out that if I put a parchment cone together right, with a tiny-enough hole at the point, then I can pipe the delicate parts of the monogram. Now I just have to get the color right. I'm going to try for a blue that's in the vase, but it's hard to find a blue food color dark enough. Adding black adds a greyish tint that isn't vibrant and pretty, as you can see:
But overall, I'm very pleased! It's going to be a beautiful cake!!
