4687: Shell

Aug 18, 2013 21:49

oh hay it's been a while...

So I made a shell account for Steam [see what I did there?] to try out free-to-play games and whatever w/o ruining my perfect "streak" on my main [and also re-buy games I think deserve double-dipping], but it turns out Steam is super paranoid about money and won't let me buy/sell on the Market until after a trial period. I guess that makes sense, but I HAVE WALLET BALANCE THERE =C

[also, how the hell does Steam Wallet count as "income" such that I can't sell more than 200 things a year w/o giving them my SSN, that is bullshit]

[[Steam Wallet balance is STORE CREDIT, those of you not on Steam]]

[[[also, I would get around the 200/year w/o SSN limit by using the shell account SEE WHAT I DID THEREhey if this was illegal, there'd be better protections in place and anyway STORE CREDIT]]]

That seems trivial to be the reason I come back out of LJ silence, but I figured I should spell it out to the two of you on Steam who still read this.

MORE IMPORTANTLY[ish], I found Patreon through the grapevine, and while it's still not a substitute for a Real Job, it definitely looks more up my alley than any alternative so far. Yes, I will likely get like two sponsors each putting in $1/update [read: $1/month], but hey, I will have the structure in place to improve, and that's enough for me! I mean, shit, I'd rather work on actual updates than any of the merchandising ideas I've been struggling with but not showing anyone 'cause if it bombs I'd rather y'all thought I was just playing Bastion instead of doing and throwing out shitty work.

This isn't to say I should not work on merchandising kinds of things--they'll just be more manageable, like "I will give $2-tier backers an exclusive desktop wallpaper [hopefully a monthly one]" instead of "I will spend 50 hours working on a design of a cat sitting on money that two people will buy and earn me $5" kinds of things.

I just wish I could throw myself into Patreon instead of having to divide my time into that + hunting for a Real Job. The Real Job stuff always makes me feel dishonest somehow, like I'm totally unhireable and why am I wasting people's time [or, even, why am I wasting the time of people looking for Real Employees when I should just go back to Target].

We'll see, though. I'll look into signing up at Patreon proper during the week [since it's a good idea to treat "get a job" as a regular day job until the regular day job materializes]... at the moment, weekends still feel like "me" time when work is impossible to accomplish =p
