You may have missed my edit to the prior post [you can find that yourself, I've already been Internetting too long today], but I did end up appending a participatory Style Shift version of my Tarot doodles to their respective posts. I also had to re-post them 'cause I found that Tumblr is kind of stupid in that I can post multiple photos to a single entry, but if I only add one photo, I can't go back and ADD MORE PHOTOS once that entry's posted, even in draft form.
Anyway,
today's, which I particularly liked such that I bumped the other one in the queue so it'd be posted sooner:
If you click-through and click the large versions, Tumblr will show the images in a slideshow format where you can swap them out and see how (not) alike they are =D
SO ANYWAY I think what I want to say [but won't specifically in my SB-tagged posts 'cause that feels unnecessarily gripey when I've already been passed over by them twice now] is I have personally done the Style Shift thing so often that it's almost annoyingly easy to do, if not patronizingly so. The protest post still feels accurate: While I can/DO learn something from mimicking someone else's style, it feels like "cheating"--not to mention I find that analyzing something I like* to such a degree takes some of the enjoyment out of it. [semi-spoiler] Tomorrow's--unless I bump it again--is
Kate Beaton style, which is hilarious in its (deliberate?) awfulness, but having to actually draw the style is painful. Even, say,
copying Tracy Butler's style was aggravating because there are little things she does that I really don't like myself. Ears, for instance. And I'm just not fond of
Lackadaisy style in the first place but wanted to try.
*I really don't want to imitate a style I hate. Why do that to myself? I see nothing to be gained in learning how to draw like Rob Liefeld. [Even
making a joke about it would be painful.]
My other ideas are
Garry Trudeau, especially for his
storyline this week, and maybe
Keith Knight, but I feel like I need some more girl artists in there. I'd sooner avoid FURREH artists, though, since it's kinda samey between too many artists. I did
Bill Holbrook because it seemed easy in a pinch (I was effectively drawing two catch-up pics in a day) and
Jolly Jack because the style seemed to suit The Lovers (and EWS is *SO DONE*)...
Ethan Nicolle seemed to be a good "I need to avoid just picking easy subjects" target.
Otherwise the only ones coming to mind are
Danielle Corsetto,
Isabel Gonzales/Marks, and the big syndicated peeps [Lynn Johnston, Cathy Guisewite]. Maybe
Dana Simpson if you wanna count her, but I've already kinda done her older style before. Ugh =/ I want another Axe Cop! [not too difficult, but distinctively different]
[I guess I could do
Oglaf, but that would mean admitting I read a DEFINITELY NSFW comic]
Well, we'll see! It's be nice if I had a JOB or something that would make me actually miss a day, but |=(
