3027: I Could Make You Care

Jan 31, 2009 12:09

On that feeling like a bad person bit I mentioned before [too lazy to link, just scroll back some days], it's justifiiable that I could feel good when friends of mine are going through a crisis,* because their life is theirs and mine is mine, and why should my[/anyone else's] life be brought down because someone else's[/my] life is going through a rough patch. I have the same sentiment even about lesser hurts, like "It's Valentine's, and I'm alone" or "It's my birthday and no one remembered" or "Boo hoo it's Monday"--should I feel bad just because someone else does? It seems like a poor reason to stop being happy or at least content.

I do feel bad, because Crisis is pretty big, but that's all I can do, really. Feeling bad just out of sympathy isn't productive, though, and I know they wouldn't want me to stop my life on their account.

It just feels weird reading about Life-Altering Event and then all I have is fluff. Fluff is what I can do, tho =p

*Most of you know what I'm talking about, since we by-and-large have the same Friends lists. The odd few who don't would just feel bad and be even more removed from ability to help, which is the main reason I'm not reposting [relatively] old news.

On the last one, I keep forgetting if it's "Jessie" with an I, 'cause the ones I knew were "Jesse," and "Jessie" looks like a girl's name, in which case it'd be a song about lesbians... ^^; [HAWT]

I also have some housecleaning to do--that is, here's some saved crap:The story is told of five men sitting around a potbellied stove, arguing about which is the "right" religion--which offers the greatest assurance of salvation. It was a fruitless discussion because no one could agree. Finally they turned to a wise old fellow who had been sitting in the corner, listening.

"Gentlemen," he said, "when the cotton is picked, there are several ways to get it to the gin. We can take the northern route--it's longer but the road is better. Or we can take the southern route, which is shorter but filled with chuckholes. Or we can go over the mountain, even though it's more perilous. When we reach the gin, though, the man doesn't ask which way we came. He simply asks, 'Brother, how good is your cotton?'" [Dale Turner, Grateful Living]

Seek first to understand and then to be understood. Most people do not listen with the intent to understand: they listen with the intent to reply. They're filtering everything through their own paradigms, reading their autobiography into other people's lives. [Stephen R. Covey, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People]

Procrastination means you know what you need to do and you don't do it. If you don't know what to do, you aren't procrastinating. You are thinking. [Lynn Lively, The Procrastinator's Guide to Success]
