FROM HELL
July 5th 2002, DVD, Tony's living room, Seattle
Can Johnny Depp do no wrong? Verily, he cannot. Though this film has flaws, Johnny is not one of them. In fact, this film has very few flaws - it's a great version of the famous graphic novel by Eddie Campbell and Alan Moore, cinematically rich, lovingly researched, and it's got Ian bloody Holm as the freakin' Ripper. The Hughes brothers redeem themselves handily here after the semi-fiasco that was DEAD PRESIDENTS, and show themselves filmmakers of grace, style, intelligence, and political consciousness. Of course, i kind of doubt that even the most brazen of "unfortunate" women in London were as riot-grrly as Mary Kelley and her compatriots (particularly Heather Graham, who while incandescent as usual, overdoes the modern London a bit in her accent), but other than that (and Johnny's accent, come to think of it, far more reminiscent of EASTENDERS than MASTERPIECE THEATRE) this is totally great from start to finish. Also, I'd been lead to believe it was much gorier than it actually was - there's less gore in this movie than in the average episode of the X-Files. Oh, except for that throat-cutting - that was really extreme and beautiful. The Hughes brothers must also be fans of Jorg Buttgereit, but only uses him to season with.
