MY SUPER EX-GIRLFRIEND
March 3 2009, FX Network, home living room

Well, I was curious, and it was on, and I will give pretty much any superhero-related anything a try. It's just how I swing; it's been like that since I was a little kid. I blame SUPERMAN; it got me at a very formative age.

And yeah... the reviews at the time make sense to me now; this is an okay movie, and probably made a good air-conditioned popcorn diversion on a hot summer day, but it's not GOOD. And this from Ivan Reitman, the man once capable of brilliance like GHOSTBUSTERS and STRIPES - GROUNDHOG DAY is ten times the movie this is. It's a bit sloppy, it feels somewhat half-written (or butchered in the editing room), and about a third of the jokes aren't really funny. Another third of them, however, are bark-out-loud hilarious, so that's nice.

With talent like this - Anna Faris, Eddie Izzard, and Rainn Wilson as the struts supporting the massive heads of Luke Wilson and Uma Thurman in the leads - you'd figure funnier. But the script doesn't support it. Anna Faris is just marvelous, though, and I think I will pursue her career. I rarely see that level of intelligence transmitted on screen, even though I doubt that she's really book-smarter than Uma Thurman. Uma has rather an animal cunning, that kind of carnivorous intensity that is much more the source of her charisma than her cubist face and giraffe's body. She makes them beautiful, but they're not initially so. Oh, and Luke Wilson? I don't know what's happening to him. I know I don't like it, though.

Bonus appearance from Wanda Sykes, who is hilarious and gorgeous as always. Also? She is TINY.

Yeah, not recommended. I'm not sorry I watched - some of the fights and stunts would either be welcome on Heroes, or have indeed already been done on the show - but I don't think I'd bother to watch it again, even if there was nothing else on. If it was really terrible, it would somehow be more entertaining. Instead, it's just limp and workmanlike. And Rainn Wilson is way too thin; I don't like that, either. Pretty much nothing goes right.

action, asskicking, home, comedy, superheroes, cable, don't bother
