Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN
March 1 2009, DVD, home living room, from library

Yes, it seems to be "catching up on the more critical and popular hits of the last four years" time, doesn't it? I'm OK with that, though I am going to need to take a break from brilliance pretty soon, though I've got THE DESCENT about to drop... so... anyway. This was wonderfully floofy and yet extremely heavy in another sense. Why, yes, it is Spanish!

This means that Alfonso Curaon is 4 out of 4 in all of the film's he's directed that I've seen that totally rocked my ass. I knew that my happy appreciation when I watched HARRY POTTER AZKABAN would lead to wonderful things, but I honestly didn't expect CHILDREN OF MEN, and I had very high hopes for MAMA. They were justified. And it's not quite the movie that I've been led to believe it is; and you know what? That was enough of an unexpected pleasure that I won't even talk about what makes it so. If you haven't seen it yet, you should go into it knowing nothing more than "two cute young middle-class Mexican teenage best friends go on a post-high-school-graduation road trip with an older woman. Nakedness ensues, and everybody learns a lesson."

Gael Garcia Bernal is an extraordinarily beautiful young man, as well. I'm glad to have seen him in something, including in the altogether. Diego Luna, his companion, has his own puppyish charm, but he lacks those extraordinary eyes... still, it hardly matters; he's beautiful too. And most beautiful, more sexy and uninhibited, is Maribel Vertu as the female at the center of the balance. Yes, you can see where this is going.

Wonderful.
