Currently LJing at Beuhlaland over biscuits and gravey. Hot damn these things are delicious. And delicious Stumptown coffee and delicious internet.
Yesterday was an exercise in immersion therapy. I allowed myself to be completely immersed in Beatles. I listened to Rubber Soul the whole first half of the day while I walked around returning overdue movies, then went to Powell's and bought a bass book and a Beatles photography book (for under $20, I might add). Then I went to a little music shop on Hawthorne and bought Help. (I'd gone to sleep watching the movie the previous night and felt it was time that I acquired the album.) Listened to that for the rest of the day as I ate breakfast at Beuhlaland and read my Beatles photography book (the early days - 64 through 66 ish). When I went home, I immediately started playing bass. You guessed it - Beatles songs. I now know more songs on the bass by the Beatles than any other band or artist by far.
Later that evening I went and rented Hard Day's Night. And watched it. Then tried to go to sleep watching Velvet Goldmine, but that didn't work, so I put Hard Day's Night back in and fell asleep just fine.
This morning, on my way to Beuhlaland (it's really good, cheap enough, and one plate will hold me for most of a day; besides which, there's no food in my house) I purposely DIDN'T bring my CD player, as an experiment on listening to the world around me instead of John, Paul, George and Ringo. It's going well. Except right now I'm on hold with the Vet trying to get Simon in for an appointment: he's got a funny lump on his left hip and isn't moving quite as quickly as usual. We thought it was just a sprain or something similar, but it's been a few days and I think it's grown. I could be paranoid and imagining things, but you never know.
I'm so into music right now. Everything is all plugged into the bass. I made a practice CD yesterday - half songs I know on the bass already, half songs I want to know on the bass. It's a good method, I think. I have an entire CD that I can just put on an listen to the *bass*, solely, for that purpose. Also gives me a long practice block - like playing a set with a band orsomething.
I wanna be in a band. Like, a real band. With folks I know and like playing music with and can really gel with and... ::sigh:: It wasn't like that with Brett. There was no chemistry. That's why I basically told him to bugger off. I want to find a band of kids my age with just enough talent under their belts to keep them interesting and... ::sigh::
Maybe I should start looking for "bassist wanted" ads in the paper. Or on Craig's List. D'you think I'm good enough yet? Why'm I asking y'all, most of you haven't heard me play recently. ::sigh:: In a lot of ways, I REALLY miss sophomore year band. I miss gelling with folks like that. Like, I still remember little quirks about Isaac and Duncan and Zach's playing that I don't think I'll ever forget, because they were my... first band.......
... Dang. I have Duncan's phone number. I really ought to give him a call.
