Flying Dutchman was weird. I definitely enjoyed the music - I like Wagner, as a composer - but there were a LOT of story points that just didn't make sense. He's not a storyteller. It was also rather poorly directed. Lots of stand and sing, some very ineffective blocking and costume choices, and I didn't feel they'd utilized what opportunities the story gave them very well at all. All in all, good show, bad production. Sorry, Portland Opera. I could have done better.

Also, this trend of simplification and modernization of sets in theatrical productions is REALLY starting to bug me. (Ashland: TAKE NOTE) It's called Grand Opera for a reason. People go there expecting spectacle and amazement, period pieces and fabulous, grand costumes. Not a wedding dress that looks like a gunny sack and a ship that's supposed to look like an old-fashioned sailing ship, and in fact looks like the inside of an oil tanker.

If I ever get the chance to direct theater, I will definitely utilize carousel sets, cos I think those things are damned awesome.

In other news, I had some really bizarre dreams last night. In the first one, Ali, Sylvia and I all got pregnant around the same time. They were really happy. I tried to be happy, but was more like "eh heh..." Then everyone got really stoned except me, and I started crying. Sylvia told me to go back to therapy, which was actually exactly what I needed to hear (both in the dream ad out). Maybe figure out why I can't keep a job and why I hate work so damn much. Then there was some other crazy crap about how I was going to bear the antichrist and bring about Apocalypse, but I think that was a product of going to bed hungry and getting awoken no less than FOUR TIMES by my beloved, spastic cat.

I REALLY don't want to go to work today. I really, really don't. I have an interview with Ben and Jerry's today, but I'm not too optimistic. They might hire me, but I don't want to sacrifice my entire evenings until 10 on weekdays and 12 on weekends for part time work. Fuck that shit. At least I like the hours at Big Town Hero if I don't like anything else about it. (Except the free sandwiches.)

I spent the whole morning learning Nowhere Man on the bass, though. That made me happy. But it's another case where what's in the book is not what's in the song, really. It's not what Paul played. But whatever, it's ok the way it is and when I get it down I'll be able to sing along with it no problem at all. (It's all quarter notes, with a few eighths thrown in here and there. Gasp. So hard.) It's got some weird things going on, but that's mostly cos it's in a bizarre key.

dreams, work, in other news, theater
