That is the real question, who do you really want to impress, and why?
If you want to make money, you definintely need to be concerned with impressing employers, or building your own business. If you plan on spending a lot of time with your family, you probably want to try and impress them. If you want to be famous, you need to find a way to impress millions of people with your talents/creativity/work ethic/whatever. That one tends to be difficult, I'm personally not very interested in.
For me, the hardest person to impress is myself. I'm never satisfied with anything. When it comes down to it, I'm seriously working 14-16 hours a day, on work, on school, and on my own personal projects and attempts to educate myself farther outside of my current boundaries, because I'm just not satisfied that I'm anywhere close to my fullest potential. From what I've observed, this is the only way to become a master at anything, to get so deeply entrenched in what you like doing that you're just willing to do it until you fall asleep, and to try and find new ways of factoring in what you like to do into your job and other free time. You have to love it. If you don't have this kind of commitment to whatever it is you want to do, then maybe you're going in the wrong direction, because I think "chilling" is the pussy way out of life. But that's just me.
