various fandom fic recs
So while twittering all in a flurry tonight, I realized that I have a lot of fanfiction bookmarked on my computer. And while they do me a lot of good - I pull them out during lulls in the various fandoms I'm in, and happily immerse myself in stories for hours at a time - what I really like doing is recommending fic to interested parties.
So I'm starting this, I guess. Maybe a monthly thing? (Or maybe this should just be a one time thing. Let me know.) Of posts that list fics that I really, really like and would like to share with my f-list. (Even, though, you know. I'm friends with the majority of writers that I love, so you'll probably see a lot of your works on the list. Well. Anyway.)
Chuck
Title: Chuck Vs the Checkmate

Summary: Chuck is good with lasers. Really, really good.
Why it's awesome: Um. Because the BBT gang have a laser tag chess night with Chuck, Morgan, and Sarah.
Title: Four Times Chuck was a Hero by Being Nerdy

Why it's awesome: While Chuck is indeed awesome, y'know, dealing with the Intersect on a daily basis, I have a soft spot for Chuck using his, yes, nerdiness to save the day. There's two pre-series, when Chuck is the best friend and brother ever, and then Chuck just dominates missions with his knowledge of Star Wars and LARP.

Why it's awesome: How Ellie fell for Awesome. They are the two greatest side characters EVER (well, a close second is Morgan, but still) and I love whenever fics delve into their relationship, either in canon or pre-series, because while Awesome, is...awesome, I've always found it interesting how such a by the rules girl like Ellie ever fell in love with him (despite his gorgeousness).
Alice (SyFy)
Title: Bluebottles
Author: orange_crushed
Summary: Sometimes happiness tries to smother him with a pillow during the commercial breaks, but he can live with that.
Why it's awesome: A short, fluffy drabble that discusses after Hatter settles into New York with Alice, and the theme is happiness. Hatter is supremely happy living in a strange new world, as long as he's with the girl he loves.
Title: The Grit and the Pearl (and the sequel: White Diamond)
Author: funkyinfishnet
Summary: Wonderland is being rebuilt. Duchess works to find her place in it, and for Jack to see the truth in her.
Why it's awesome: Jack and the Duchess are perfect for each other. And I love how the fic explores his gradual thawing towards her, and how she's just quietly, patiently waiting for him. It's a great character study of both of them.
Life With Derek
Title: Significant Other

Summary: Derek and Casey have to deal with college life.
Why it's awesome: Oh, where do I start? First of all, it's college!verse which I LOVE. And then it has Casey overthinking everything and tracking down Paul's cell phone number, and Derek just being cool and relaxed and just waiting for Casey to calm down and kiss him.
Title: so tell me when you're gonna let me in

Summary: In which real, grown-up life is uh, actually not all that fun, sometimes.
Why it's awesome: Derek and Casey have a serious relationship in college. Then they have a falling out. Then Derek marries a rail-thin actress who is basically Casey's mirror image. Then they completely sever ties. And then Marti comes to the rescue, Marti who is now a swearing teen who's greatest wish is to get Derek and Casey back together. And did I mention Casey now has a gay best friend who she sobs to about her life over drinks? This fic is fantastic and I love everything that moirariordan writes and oh, god, READ THIS NOW.
Merlin
Title: Just Friends

Summary: Morgause sets Morgana up on a bunch of incredibly awful dates. Oh, and there's superheroes.
Why it's awesome: Um, that summary was enough to suck me in. But yes. For coherence. It is Merlin/Morgana. It is superhero!AU. It has Arthur/Gwen in an established relationship. And Morgause and Lancelot are delightful side characters.
Title: The Lay of Sir William of Daira

Characters: William, Merlin and the gang
Summary: An honest farmer is lured to Camelot by a scheming manservant and his somewhat insane prince, or: how William experienced events during The Once and Future Queen.
Why it's awesome: Because William of Daira was awesome. He's hilarious and his commentary on what he thinks is going on between Gwen and Arthur and his observations about court and his boy crush on Sir Leon and girl crush on Morgana is just...great.
Title: A Different Kind of Token

Characters: Arthur/Gwen
Summary: Episode 2 if it were modern day AU, set at Albion University.
Why it's awesome: meowsings SINGLE HANDEDLY turned me onto the Merlin fandom. And yes, through a modern AU fic, which, I've mentioned on twitter, is my utter soft spot for this fandom. This is the first part of a cracktastic AU series, and it's sexy and so in character, and I just want to take Merlin by his ears and rub my face into his adorable little face.
Doctor Who
Title: Vita Longa

Characters: Rory
Summary: Rory's life is a romance, but definitely not one he expected. (Spoilers through 5.13)
Why it's awesome: I love Rory Williams. And his love for Amy. This magnificent fic explores the two lifetimes of Mr. Amy Pond, and it's researched perfectly (so many Roman trivia, my inner Classics major is all a flutter) and it captures exactly what it's like to have lived two entirely different timelines. Oh and there's Rory/Jeff, Rory/Amy, and a good dose of Rory/Amy/Doctor. GLORIOUS.
Title: You're Just My Cup of Tea, Or: Domesticity is Setting in

Characters: Eleven/River
Summary: The Doctor, River, and teacups. Flirting ensues! Again, some more. (Spoilers up through "A Good Man Goes to War."
Why it's awesome: Flirting! Teacups! The Doctor gave Lady Gaga the discostick! Utter fluff, which was a relief to read after the mid-series finale of series 6.
Title: Experimental Science

Characters: Donna Noble
Summary: Donna thinks she's just about back to normal.
Why it's awesome: For one thing, Donna's in it. And another, she can't help but keep the mad genius part of the Doctor from spewing out. And so she quietly helps the universe. Donna is amazing. I read this as canon. Little bits of the Time Lord side of her just plop out of Donna into everyday life, and she is the supertemp who saves the world, every day, by fixing electronics and helping wayward space travelers, even if she doesn't quite realize why. And I love that she finds comfort in this.
Title: The Tardis House Rules (sequel to The Rules of Torchwood Three, which could be read first, to minimize confusion about the OMC)

Characters: Nicholas (OMC), Ten, Donna
Summary: Life with the Doctor is both simple and complex, but fortunately Nicholas and Donna have the Whenkipedia to guide them. (Spoilers through the finale of Season 4)
Why it's awesome: Because Nicholas is a quiet, introspective character who observes and understands the Doctor in ways that even Donna and Rose couldn't. (But this doesn't mean that Nicholas is a passive character - he impacts the Doctor in great ways and is just as much a companion as any other.) I love the idea that the Tardis has house rules, and that practically all of the Doctor's companions have broken them or are the reason why rules exist.

Title: Journey to Make, Horizon to Chase

Summary: Susan Pevensie goes to Blackstock College
Why it's awesome: This was my first venture into the Narnia fandom, and it is spectacular. Susan grows up and flourishes at Blackstock College, but there's always something nagging at the corner of her eye. She finds a doorway to another world, and finally meets Caspian again. This fic is amazing, it's incredibly well-written, and I wish this would happen in canon.
Title: went broke believing that the simple should be hard

Characters: Joe Jonas/Demi Lovato
Summary: "How was the photoshoot?" Joe asks her, leaning back, danging the beer between his legs. "I looked gorgeous, you know." "Given, yes," he says, smiling. Feeling the alcohol in his face. His hands. "Come over," he murmurs, already thinking how nice it would be to have her leaning against him.
Why it's awesome: So I have a weird relationship with Disney. I pretend I have no interest in their shows, but I'm obsessed with reading RPF fic. And cashewdani is a goddess at writing fic. SHE'S AMAZING. I love Joe/Demi, even though so much shit has hit the fan, and my heart hurts thinking that they're done for, and he's probably a huge factor in her whole rehab thing, but I console myself by reading this fantastic fic about the two of them. They're adorable and so perfect for each other, and Demi fits so well into his life and with his band. I just love it a lot.

Summary: Apparently this is a future episode, him guest starring and they have to kiss or something.
Why it's awesome: cereal has these characters DOWN. Tone and dialogue and everything. Sonny and Chad bicker and fight and build up so much UST and then they kiss and can't stop kissing. Basically, all the wonderfulness of first season added with a hefty dose of kissing and a little bit of Tawni obliviousness, and it's fantastic.
