Notes from the Connell Lab

Jun 07, 2007 10:15

So, I've been at work since 8:30. This is my first day as a full-time employee. And here I was, thinking I wouldn't be able to find enough things to do... I'm stuck right now because I'm waiting for Melissa, my supervisor, to come in, as I have some questions I want to ask her, rather than Laurie. I hate to bug Laurie, she always seems like she's in the middle of something important- moreso knowing that she's finishing up a grant to return to Anarctica.

I have to remember to stop by UCU either at lunchtime or after work to withdraw the money I need to cover the rent... Mom was nice enough to pay for half this month. Yay for my mother! :)

That, my friends, is the yeast known as Aleurodiscus. :3 I really hate the fact that I'm going to have to leave the lab on the 30th, as I really like working here. Maybe I can make the work-study happen this fall and continue... I guess we'll see.

Well, that's all for now. I might update later if I get bored, but for now I'm off to have a quick snack and then probably get started on doing the 13 sets of stocks that I have lined up for today.

Update as of 11 AM: OMG I just found a pad of MST3K Post-Its hiding in the back of one of the drawers... I am so tempted to steal them... God only knows how long those have been out of circulation!!

Update as of 2:30 PM: I just had a glass bottle full of PDA (Potato Dextrose Agar) explode in my hands, as I was shaking it up for plate-pouring. I now smell like mashed potatoes. :/ It was pretty cool to witness, though... it didn't shatter into a million pieces, one random fragment just popped- and seriously, that is the word, I heard "Pop!"- and then PDA media was all over my shirt and jeans and the floor. I almost wish I could have taken a picture of it.
Found out about a new program on the web from Melissa, called Pandora. You just type in the name of your favorite artist (we did Sarah Brightman, because I couldn't remember the name of any of the composers for "Trigun" and the like) and it plays a song by that artist, and then similiar artists and songs follow. If you don't like it, you click the little "thumbs-down" icon and it returns to the style you were enjoying. If you're interested, go to Pandora.com and try it out. Hence, the lab is now resonating with the sounds of beautiful operatic female vocals. :3
