Happy Holidays

What the heck is the deal with the whole happy holidays/merry christmas controversy? I was just watching the news, and there's some people protesting outside a walmart because they used "holidays" instead of "christmas" for their seasonal advertising. Isn't Christmas a freaking Holiday? This is my 5th holiday season in the US, and it's the first ( Read more... )

I think the Happy Holiday/Merry Christmas fight is really stupid, too. It seems to me that a lot of these people are trying to force their own religios holiday (Christmas) on other people. Wal-Mart can wish people a Happy whatever holiday they choose and if these people really (and irrationally) offended by it, then they can shop somewhere else.

Yeah... anybody who has beef with whether somebody says happy holidays or merry Christmas is kind of missing the point of the holiday season. ;) The spirit of Winter, christian Christmas, secular Christmas, Hannakah(sp?), etc. is not protesting and arguing about political correctness. ;)

It's about food! Lots and lots of food! ;-p

"They're not offended by santa claus!"

I wouldn't be so sure. Here in St. Louis, my mother works for the public library system, and she's been instructed not to use Santa Claus in any decorations because he's a religious icon.

Oddly enough, the library's allowed to decorate for Hanukkah or Kwanzaa as much as desired... which makes it seem like whoever's lobbying for these policies is more anti-Christian than pro-separation-of-church-and-state.

By "they" I meant christians, since santa wasn't around when Jesus was born, so he shouldn't really be a part of christmas anyway... but that's a whole 'nother topic. Christmas is supposed to be about Jesus' birth, at least the way I see it. And I agree with you that it is unfair to allow Hanukkah and kwanzaa decorations, but not christmas. If you're not going to allow religious decorations, don't allow ANY at all. Or put 'em all up! Let's celebrate the diversity, or something!
