At current employer I am on pager duty 2 weeks out of ever two months. Pager duty is being on call when something happens to a critical system. It isn't the great but it comes with the territory. I was always on call with $PREVIOUS_EMPLOYER but never had to worry about things much after 2000hrs. I had a 6 hour response time after 8. $CURRENT_EMPLOYER is an entirely new industry. We are a web service that needs to be running 24x7. Now when my pager goes off I have to respond quickly.

I don't mind pager duty. It comes with the profession. I knew it when I made the decission to be a sysadmin. However, Susan doesn't like it too much and she didn't choose to be a sysadmin. When the pager goes off at 0145hrs, she gets woken up as well. She can't fix the system but she is up anyway. Normally it only takes a few minutes to fix the problem and I am back to sleep in as soon as my head hits the pillow. Poor Susan has a problem sleeping and she is awake for a long period of time.

I guess it probably stinks being the significant other of a sysadmin from time to time.
