There are certain professions that responsibility is a requirement and expected: doctor, pilot, police office and pharmacist. Every job comes with a certain level of responsibility, these are jobs that the responsibility is because of an impact on other people. There is one profession that is left of this list because so many members don't show responsibility is Information Technology.
Call 'em system administrators, network administrators, computer guy you know the folks I am talking about. They are the people who take care of your data, who ensure your communications are available. These are the people who, more and more, are working just for a paycheck.
Why is this okay? Think about how much of your life, both personal and professional, is spent, stored and transmitted with computers. The people with the power over these system should be tremendously responsible. Nothing else should be tolerated.
These people are failing. How are they failing? Think about the virus outbreaks. Think about spam. Think about network outages. These are the responsibility of the IT professionals. We are failing miserably.
How do we fix these things? We start focusing on stability and security and not just uptime. If you have stability and security the uptime will naturally follow. The biggest problem is that users do not like to wait so their is a natural rush to accomplish tasks. When you get in a situation like this pause, think and implement the best possible solution.
Oh yeah, and remember, patch and patch often
