So, despite three straight wins, Swinton then lost their coach and we're right back in the shit (potentially), cuntybollocks!
Here's the latest report that I sent to League Weekly earlier on:
Swinton Lions 24 Workington Town 32 by Jeff Tyldesley
Yet another traumatic week of 2014 for Swinton ended with the Lions shorn of their coach and both half backs who have lead them on a recent three game winning streak, yet somehow picking up a bonus point from being 0-32 down.
With player-coach Ian Watson joining Salford’s coaching staff and dual registered Gareth O’Brien recalled by Warrington, Chris Atkin and Jordan Burke were paired together for the first time by new boss John Duffy.
The result was a toothless first forty minutes from the Lions, where they never looked like scoring and Town opened up a lead they would never lose.
Both sides struggled early on with finishing their chances, Darren Hawkyard lost the ball going for the line after a big hit from Mike Morrison on James Duerden dislodged the ball from the Town forward’s grasp.
James Brown was caught ballstealing from Kris Coward and it was Town’s turn to press but Brett Carter was caught out using shepherding at the other end.
The Lions then had a dominant spell, Atkin making a super sixty metre break after Freddie Walker palmed down a Carl Forber kick for the corner, before Carter raced back to tackle.
The attack came to nothing and so did the next one, Walker made some great ground, beating four men before being stopped by full back Jack Murphy. Brown then shot through the Town cover but neglected to pass, with three in support.
With Swinton also missing the guidance of the experienced duo of loanees from Leigh, Martin Aspinwall and Steve Maden, they fell to a Town sucker punch, quick hands from Carl Forber and Andy Morris prised an opening for Carter at the corner, goaled by Forber.
That was followed up by strong running and well-timed pass from Brett Phillips for Jason Mossop to capitalise.
The Lions were reeling and making basic errors, a kick for touch after a high tackle on Andy Ackers didn’t reach touch. Then Atkin ran onto a pass that wasn’t meant for him, knocked on and the wily Carter picked up and raced ninety five metres to score beneath the sticks.
Even with a penalty count that read an impressive 7-1 in favour of the Lions after the half hour, they couldn’t penetrate the Town line, Ed Barber was held on his back and after trapping Town in goal for a second set consecutive set, the Lions blew it when Josh Barlow couldn’t grasp Barber’s pass.
Then another huge blow for the Lions, as centre Anthony Bowman was stretchered off with a serious looking knee injury that required lengthy treatment. The home side still had work to do to hold out till the interval and Town went for more points. An off-the-ball hit on Mossop looked to have gifted two points although Forber was off target with a penalty kick.
The Cumbrians finished the job early in the second half, racing into a thirty two point advantage, firstly Greg Burke flicked out a neat pass for Nathan Lucock to scamper over.
Then Ben Warrilow knocked on a ball picking it off the floor in his own half; from which Jarrad Stack expertly sucked in three defenders out wide, leaving Mossop the space to cash in at the corner.
Finally, a break down the right from Brett Phillips, lead to Forber strolling in with three Town players in support, this left a rare easy conversion, Town only kicked three goals all day, leaving the door ajar for an unlikely Swinton comeback…
Whether Town ‘declared’ or Swinton’s new half back pairing clicked, is up for debate but the Lions piled on the points in the final quarter.
Richie Hawkyard’s dummy breakaway was a warning shot across the bows, as shortly afterwards Atkin was the creator, his run and pass sending in Darren Hawkyard out wide, onto which Mick Nanyn added his first of four successful conversions.
It was Atkin himself who evaded the previously impregnable Town defence for the second and he came close to a 40-20 with the very next possession.
Forber raced by Nanyn but half back partner Callum Phillips was outpaced by Jordan Burke who managed to stop the try. Workington swung it wide, too wide in fact, when Morris’ pass went flying into touch.
Burke then got involved at the other end, providing the offload for Gavin Bennion to crash over by the sticks, the Lions were within two of getting a point for all this late toil.
When Atkin’s chip kick made an awfully deceiving bounce over the chasers’ heads, it looked like Swinton would be foiled but Town helped in their own downfall with an illegal lift on Ritchie Hawkyard being penalised. Zach Johnson’s determined charge was held up but Darren Hawkyard found Warrilow, whose shimmy lost the Workington defence and he sprinted over.
Still, there was time for Swinton to lose it, with Workington knocking hard on the door at the end, Walker having to wrap up Mossop ten metres out as the hooter was blown, to secure the point.
