Ok, so a few days ago, the brand new fan in the office started to smell like burning rubber. So, we cut power to the circuit since we didn't want to take any chances. The same electrician that tried to do the light switch came over again to try to see what was wrong with the fan. After taking the fan down, he realized the wiring was a total mess. It took him a good ten minutes just to figure out how the wiring worked, since it was so messy and worn out. Also, it was wired in a very non-standard way, which made it a bit more difficult to figure out. But once he figured out how it was wired and how it should be wired, it didn't take long to fix it. Hopefully now it will work and won't burn anymore. Also, after seeing how that fan was wired, we are pretty confident that most of the fans in the house are wired in a similar way. Which means eventually we are going to have to rewire most of the fans here. Uhg... what a mess.
The electrician also fixed the line going to our shed. For about a month now, the power to the shed has been in and out, sometimes it would work but most of the time the light wouldn't come on at all. It turns out there were two loose wires (please note, there are only two junctions from start to finish). That means every single junction was loose. Luckily it didn't take too long to straighten out, and now they are tight and shouldn't come loose again. He was surprised the air conditioner even worked, because as soon as he touched the main wire to the air conditioner it just fell apart (the shed wire is connected to the air conditioner). He fixed all the connections though, so with any luck it will be steady power again. I can't believe a house that is only ten years older than our last one could be in such crummy shape. Apparently the previous owners didn't care about specs and didn't do any preventive maintenance. Just in case you too are confused, it is NOT ok to put a 100 watt bulb in a 25 watt light. It will melt the wires. That is all.
