Hmm. Strange one this week, but I actually enjoyed a lot of the elements and I think they tied very well together.
- first things first: NEEDS MOAR KARA. Ahem.
Anyway, I loved how this ep really took on the idea of 'what happens when you find out that oppressive destiny doesn't really exist?'. Laura takes up jogging and sex, and gives up her medication; Bill is still trying to keep things together in the old style, even though it's not quite working, mainly because he's giving himself up to the things he swore he wouldn't in 'Unfinished Business'; Kara's just confused (poor thing). Zarek totally loves the opportunity to puruse the revolution he's been working on for all these years. Even Gaeta's throwing off the shackles of duty and going down a new path.
Another theme that I thought was important was the father-son relationship (for once not all about Lee and Bill). Okay, the Nicky storyline smacked of retcon (also the kidney failure thing is a standard soap device, ala the Hollyoaks Jake and Charlie story) and was clearly a way to handwave the issue of having two cylon babies...but on the other hand I liked how it fitted well with Baltar's speech about parental responsibility. God left the hospital bed, in other words. Adama is doing pretty much the same thing with the fleet. I don't quite get where the hell Baltar is going with his anti-god stuff, because it seems a bit of a 180 - and I also miss HeadSix a lot. I loved it when he just sat there while his meeting became a brawl - hope to see more of him later.
I love how Gaeta was the voice of the audience, in a way - or at least that certain segment of the audience who have always been anti-cylon. He raised some perfectly legitimate points, and I have always loved how BSG can make you sympathise with but also hate all its characters. Bill and Laura are frequently authoritarian rulers and they did trust in this 'fate' which hasn't quite materialised...but on the other hand we've seen how they had their hearts in the right places, and how they have tried desperately to save everyone. I am looking forward to the ensuing blood bath (no, really).
Other things:
-Some lightness crept back in here with Cottle and Ishay (I looove the continuity on this show).
- Adama/Roslin interests me less now they're actually together. Also the ending was...bizarre. I expected more of a cliffhanger.
- Laura jogs like a lunatic.
- Like Chief getting back on track a little, and getting to grips with his identity.
- But then again why aren't they investigating last week's revelations a little more?
- Starbuck really is dead. She would have smacked Gaeta down right then and there.
