So I donated blood today. It was awesome. I barely felt the needle (and we all know what a sissy I am), and I didn't even get lightheaded! I filled the bag in 5 minutes, which is half of the average time. I don't really know if that's something to shout about.
So when was the last time YOU saved a life?
Did you know that there's more to blood that just types? If you have a blood type that is CMV negative, your blood is purer than 95% of the rest of the population. Your blood can be used in premature babies, lukemia patients and burn victims.
The cytomegalovirus is part of the herpes family. Almost everybody has it, so if you're positive, it's nothing to worry about. But if you are negative, you have pure blood that we love. We seriously *DO* use it in premature babies.
Even if you don't have CMV negative blood, your blood donations are always in need. Cancer patients, accident victims, surgery patients, hemopheliacs--all types of people need blood.
Later this year, my mother will be a cardiac surgery patient, and she will most likely need a transfusion. We have the same blood type, and I would hope that--even though it won't be MY specific blood that she gets--my donation is making a difference in my mother's life.
Sometimes people don't think about donating blood until someone that they love is affected. Wouldn't it be great if more people were proactive? Only 5% of the eligible population donates. 5%. That's not a lot. That means that out of every 100 people that can donate, only 5 do. Or, on a larger scale, for every 1,000 people that can donate, only 50 people do. That is a horrible number.
One accident victim can use as much as 100 units of blood in a single treatment. And once you donate, don't stop. Blood does expire, you know.
Sometimes people don't think about donating blood because the resources are not available. They haven't heard about an upcoming drive, they--like myself--don't know about donor centers or chapter houses in their area. Well, guess what. NOW YOU KNOW.
http://www.my-redcross.org is where you need to go if you live in the MD, lower PA and upper VA area. Go.
It's been in the newspapers, on the radio, and on TV. YOU KNOW WE HAVE A BLOOD SHORTAGE.
So swallow your selfishness. "I'm too busy." "I'm scared of needles." "It's too far away." "I already have plans."
No one really wants to hear it. Do you think the little baby who was born at 28 weeks really wants to hear that? Or the accident victim who's bleeding out on the operation table? Or how about the cancer patient laying in the hospital? Probably not.
Please. There are so many people who need your help and need your blood. It takes an hour of your time and one little bag to help out. Please help us.
