Work

Really wasn't too thrilled to go back to work yesterday after 4 days off. I just didn't really want to be there. At least I only had 3 people say "Are you going out of business?" to me yesterday. And one of them then proceeded to ask me whether our store was having "financial difficulties" (because of the empty shelves). As if I'm going to discuss our finances with some random customer, even if I knew the exact details (which I don't--I've got a good idea about them, but the exact details? Nope. I'm not the accountant or the owner. I do have a very good idea where the money is going at the moment, thanks especially to something I happened across by accident last night, and hopefully once that's paid for, things will change for the better, which they keep insisting will be "in July" to us).

Anyway, during the four days I had off, they changed some things at work. Namely, the way we do coupons. We still can't just scan the coupon, but at least we've got a generic barcode taped to the register and can enter in the amount of the coupon, and it shows up on the receipt as "Manufacturer's coupon" with the amount in parentheses (which means it's a negative amount). So people can quit bitching about how we didn't apply their coupon because they didn't see it listed on the receipt, which was a problem before because we had to enter the amount of the coupon in as cash, and if they happened to pay by cash, then some of them insisted that we didn't use the coupon. I'd taken to pointing that out at the time I handed them the receipt just because I was sick of being accused of cheating them...

But the other thing is that we now have to staple a receipt to the coupon, to prove that we actually had a coupon to go with it (they're afraid that someone might think, "hey, I can scan this barcode, and then take the money out of the drawer and they won't be any the wiser". You also have to put your initials on the coupon. So that's a few extra steps (and it's going to be a real pain when someone comes up with 3 or 4 coupons, because you're going to have to do it to each of them--heaven forbid that happens when we've got a line). They also made using the coupon barcode thing a manager function, so anyone who isn't a manager has to call us up to the register in order to get the coupon entered into the register. It would be a lot easier if they just let us scan the barcodes on the coupons, if you ask me.

And then they changed the paperwork we send in weekly again, so I've got something else to remember now when I'm doing it tomorrow... Apparently we send them the payroll for that period, so one week it'll be 1 week's worth of hours, the following week, it's 2 weeks' of them, and then repeat ad infinitum... It's going to be a mess trying to remember whether it's the week you send them 1 week or 2 for whoever's doing the paperwork, especially if they don't do it all the time (or if they've been away on vacation and lost track of which week it happens to be in the pay period). I think my boss is going to have to mark on the calendar or make a note with the dates or something, so we can keep track of which week it happens to be for the faxing, because right now, it's just me and him who are doing the Sunday paperwork.
