I don't know how it works in academia, but if this was corporate-world, you would accept the Harvard job, interview for the Columbia job anyway, and if the latter seems cool, un-accept the Harvard job and move to NYC.
In corporate america, you're basically rewarded for being unscrupulous, but I don't know if that flies in academia.
At any rate, congratulations! It's nice to feel like you have many options.
oh that makes me feel way better! i always feel like i am screwing people over when in reality they are probably interviewing other candidates and not really caring about me anyways (well, not in a human kind of way). i think i will do just what you suggested!
Heck no!! Is it a free lunch on them? It gives you a good excuse to travel and get out of town. I think you'd feel much better traveling a little bit, I know I always do.
Until you start working at Harvard, all is fair game. You should definitely talk to the NYC places, even if it's just to confirm that the Harvard one is really great and the one for you. Also, you can view it as networking in your field, if you'r feeling guilty. And you only tell the NYC places that you are speaking to other places too...not that you have accepted an offer.
congratulations on the harvard offer. i, for one, am not the slightest bit surprised -- your brilliance has never been in doubt, not even for a second.
what's the timeline for accepting the harvard offer? will they read into it if you don't accept immediately? how would a visit to the other two institutions fit into this time-wise?
in accordance with what everyone else is saying, it would be worth your while to interview at the other two, at least just to see what the environment's like there, do some networking, talk the talk, all that fun stuff. only if you think it wouldn't cause problems at harvard though.
what are your instinctive emotional reactions toward all three places? how did you feel when you discovered harvard accepted you? columbia's interview request? how do feel when you think about being a part of each school's program? i think that if even a small part of you is intrigued by the idea of columbia or einstein, you should take them up on the interview.
well, my decision making is also influenced by the fact that i am foreign and if i do not have a job i have to leave the country. so i need *something* and the harvard job is pretty damn good so i would hate myself if i passed up on that offer. postdocs are short in nature (approx. 2 years) so even if i hate it, it won't last forever and i will be able to move on quickly
