Which book do you irrationally cringe away from reading, despite seeing only positive reviews?

i don't normally cringe away from reading anything and i don't normally pay attention to book reviews.  i have to say, though, that after reading 'the life of pi' and 'the hours' that i really wish i hadn't.

If you could bring three characters to life for a social event (afternoon tea, a night of clubbing, perhaps a world cruise), who would they be and what would the event be?

jamie from diana gabaldon's outlander series, rourke from j.d. robb's in death series and einstein from dean koontz's book 'watchers'

(Borrowing shamelessly from the Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde): you are told you can’t die until you read the most boring novel on the planet. While this immortality is great for a while, eventually you realise it’s past time to die. Which book would you expect to get you a nice grave?

the brothers karamozoff by dostoyevsky.  i've tried to read it several times and haven't gotten past the first few pages.  i'm determined to read it at some point, but it just may be the death of me.

Come on, we’ve all been there. Which book have you pretended, or at least hinted, that you’ve read, when in fact you’ve been nowhere near it?

i gotta say that i don't pretend to read things that i haven't.  and while i've read many of the classics over the years, i often don't remember the details.  so i've read them, but that doesn't always mean anything.

As an addition to the last question, has there been a book that you really thought you had read, only to realise when you read a review about it/go to “re-read it” that you haven’t?

that happens alot with the series that i read.  i don't always remember the titles and i need to read the front flap in order to figure it out.

You’re interviewing for the post of Official Book Advisor to some VIP (who’s not a big reader). What’s the first book you’d recommend and why? (if you feel like you’d have to know the person, go ahead and personalise the VIP)

i'm not going to go all intellectual on someone who doesn't read much.  i'd have to recommend one of my favorite books - 'watchers' by dean koontz.  the characters suck you in, there's action and romance and dogs and a scary "monster".  what more could you ask for?  oh, and it does have a hidden message about everyone needing to watch out for everyone else and the individual and a larger scale.  and about being able to accomplish things you didn't think you could.  and good conquering evil...you get the idea.

A good fairy comes and grants you one wish: you will have perfect reading comprehension in the foreign language of your choice. Which language do you go with?

i have to say french.  i took 4 years of it in high school and one semester in college, but reading anything other than simple sentences was always a struggle.  will the good fairy let me speak it fluently as well??

A mischievious fairy comes and says that you must choose one book that you will re-read once a year for the rest of your life (you can read other books as well). Which book would you pick?

i'd have to go with 'watchers' since i pretty much read it every year or two anyway anyway.  but there are a lot books out there and very few that i've hated, so almost anything would do.

That good fairy is back for one final visit. Now, she’s granting you your dream library! Describe it. Is everything leatherbound? Is it full of first edition hardcovers? Pristine trade paperbacks? Perhaps a few favourite authors have inscribed their works? Go ahead - let your imagination run free.

it's got to have a big fireplace and deep. comfy carpets and soft over stuffed chairs and couches, and big windows on one wall with the other three covered in books - preferably hard cover, except for a few paperbacks that i've read over and over again.  probably a cat tree in a corner and a braided rug near my favorite resting place for chaser to lay on.  it needs to be warm and comfy and welcoming - to me, and my critters.  since my husband likes the dark leathery kind - he can have his own library.
