Title: If
Pairing: Ikuta Toma/Horikita Maki
Rating: PG
Summary: Toma imagined different scenarios if he met Maki in different ways.
A/N: Happy White Day calledinvain! I tried writing the Ohno/Meisa meeting in the theater idea but it became gigantic that I didn't get to complete it within the deadine. Hope you'd like this still since it is Toma/Maki?

If Toma hadn't met Maki in the entertainment industry, he surely would've met her as an ordinary student: he'd be making his way through the crowded train with his navy blue umbrella dripping wet, and then notice in the corner of his eye a high school girl in her uniform who had her fringe sticking to her forehead due to the rain. She'd be holding on a hand on a plastic ring, and her body would be swinging back and forth in accordance with the movement of their train. He’d notice as he observed further that she was also wet from shoulders to shoes, and that she looked absolutely adorable even as she almost lost her footing, jerking her awake momentarily before she went back to sleep.

Over time, Toma had lost track of his own station as he observed her, now sitting on the floor with her head hanged low. He'd be torn between feeling worried and amused, and that with the train almost empty he'd be brave enough to approach her before they arrive at the last station. Toma would ask if she was okay and then offer his umbrella for hers to take. She’d be embarrassed and shy, thanking him for waking him up and denying his umbrella.

Toma would then insist, claiming that his house was really close to the train station even if he would have to buy a vinyl one on his way home (that is if the convenience stores still has stock) before she reluctantly accepts. At the end of their conversation, she would bow to him and promise to return the umbrella the next time she saw him.

Of course, he would still choose meeting Maki when he visited Yamapi on his Nobuta wo Produce shooting when he was nearby. She was dripping wet in her school uniform because of the bullying scene at the bathroom, but once the director gave his okay, he had noticed that she was shivering and he had been there offering a bath towel before any of the staff could.

And then she smiled at him and that's when their friendship bloomed.

(The first scenario was created not because he was fond of a girl's high school uniform, or that he actually found the rain look beautiful to the point that he treated it as a precious moment. He was only fond of them because he saw it on Maki first - not that she'd know).

If Toma didn't act with her in Hanazakari no Kimitachi e ~Ikemen Paradise~, he'd probably just interact with her as Yamapi's acquaintance. Possibly go out for a drink or two if Yamapi would be kind enough to set up a date of sorts (not that it’d be entirely done for the sake of camaraderie but Toma thought that Maki will be worth it). She'd cut her hair short for a role, HanaKimi or not, and then he'd be caught staring because it looked so good on her he'd wonder why she didn't pull off the look earlier. She'd probably be shy (or tease him, depending on her mood then) for it for a while and then she'd go home at the end of the day riding her bicycle.

Toma's heart would stop for a while and then its beating would pick up at the image of Maki pedaling her way home, her skirt fluttering as the wind blew, and then when she looked back at him to wave one last time, her bangs which she didn't style would bounce a little as she quickly turned back again.

Instead, they acted together and got close enough to call her ‘Maki-chan', and him ‘Toma-kun'. He had fantasized how good life would be if she got to wear a sailor uniform to match that cute boyish haircut instead of the same uniform he donned while shooting their drama but his heart did that irregular beating anyway when she saw her riding a bicycle, with Hiro and Shun pushing her in order to break the ice. She looked incredibly pretty as she giggled that he even questioned how they could probably convince the general audience that Maki was supposed to appear as a boy.

It was a good thing that he’d act as one who’d be head-over-heels in love with her whilst berating himself that he was not suppose to love a guy. That way, he won't be found out.

Or so he thought until Maki pointed it out - which was a good thing still because as much as he confirmed that he liked her, he valued friendship over romantic relationships, and that meant that he won't risk whatever they currently had (Maki just called him a coward). Maki took the step then, and he was willing to take a chance as long as it's her.

If Toma had not been dating Maki, he imagined still being friends with her. Maybe she'd be talking about the newest yogurt available, or if he had already heard Elephant Kashimashi's newest album, or when would Meisa act on her apparent crush for Ohno. Maybe she'd be dating an Arashi member herself, or anyone in Johnny's for that matter. Maybe she'd date an actor or a comedian, although Maki would fall for any guy who had a good sense of humor, a great physical build, and a firm butt like the barista behind the counter of the cafe where they would be having their cup of coffees. Toma would joke how hard he trained his body for a stage play or a movie and that Maki could check if he had a firm butt too before she'd smack him lightly. Later she would be looking at him with a playful stare while sipping her Blue Mountain and he'd doubt if Maki actually took it seriously before she'd burst out, and he'd be laughing with her when he knew that he'd been had. They'd probably continue that until one or both of them marries, built families, and got more drowned in their careers but when they meet, they themselves would wonder why there was practically no distance between them even if their schedules said otherwise.

They did all these stuff even if they were together though. The only difference was that from time to time Maki would squeeze his butt when the situation presented itself while Toma would gape in fake horror until Maki pouted for him to kiss it away. They would probably still part ways in the future. But for now, when both of them were still in love with each other, he wouldn't let this go.

"What if we hadn't met?"

It was not an impossible thing, Toma thought. Maybe his mother would not send his application to Johnny's, or maybe he'd fail the auditions. Maybe Maki would not meet her scout, or if she did, maybe she would deny him fiercely, enough for him to give up. Maybe they would both be in the entertainment business before one of them fails, or if both did succeed, maybe they'd be focusing on different branches altogether and although they would hear each other's name, they wouldn't heed with the passing mentions and go on with their own lives.

But maybe he would be running a music store then where she would ask for recommendations for CDs to listen. Maybe they'd both grab the last vanilla ice cream on a convenience store and ask for the other to take it. Maybe, even if they were so focused on different types of media in the entertainment industry, several friends, and even friends of friends would refer them and they'd finally meet. Toma wasn't big on the idea of not meeting Maki at all because he was sure that there would be something missing; a void in which he'd try filling futilely.

"I'd be searching." Toma said and he knew that there was a big 'how' written all over her face before he even saw it but he knew that when asked, it was true.

--

If Toma were to come home alone like he had been in the past few years, he wouldn't really mind it as long as he was not really alone. He'd have his career, his friends, and Maki to get through loneliness if it happened to kick in after all and he'd be energized the next day to get through work.

Still, Toma wouldn't wish to turn back on the way he lived before when he could already see Maki making an onigiri on her day off as he opened the door, smelling the appetizing aroma of miso soup and making his stomach grumble even when he had a bento at their location shoot.

"Okaeringo," she said as he had his arms wrapped around her waist. He couldn't help but smile at the manner she willingly embraced the Ikuta family's way of welcoming their family members. He really got lucky with her.

"Tadaimanjuu."
