“Can I get you something to drink?”
Danny motioned for Jordan to go first. “I’ll just have a water, and….”
“Iced tea. Thanks.” The waiter walked away and Jordan took a look around the place Danny had chosen for dinner. It wasn’t an all-you-can-eat restaurant, but she could only find nice things to say about it.
The walls were covered in mirrors, creating an almost maze-like privacy that she liked. The waiters all wore traditional Japanese garments, and the deep reds and sharp angles in the architecture were gorgeous.
The waiter quickly returned with the drinks. Danny took a sip of his iced tea.
“So where did you find this place?”
Danny choked a little on his drink before setting it down and wiping his face. “Uh... Tom recommended it to me.”
“It’s nice.”
Danny smiled and looked down at his hands. “I’m glad you decided to come.”
“Danny, please," she paused. "You think I would pass up free food?” Jordan grinned as he looked up, teasing.
“Oh, I see. So you only came because I was paying, huh?”
“Of course. Why else would I come?” They smiled at each other for a second before Jordan reached over and took Danny’s hand, stilling it from its nervous idling. “Seriously. This place is great.”
He turned his hand over so they were palm-to-palm and scooted closer.
After the waiter had delivered their food, Jordan became silent, much to Danny’s amusement as she concentrated whole-heartedly on her meal.
Danny was about to ask her about her plans for later in the week when his eye caught a reflection from across the restaurant in the mirror.
----------
Roger had walked in about ten minutes after Danny and Jordan had arrived. He picked a table that had a good view of the two, but made sure only Danny and not Jordan could see him in the mirrors.
Sitting down, he ordered a scotch and waited for Danny to spot him.
----------
“Danny?” Jordan tried to meet his gaze, but he seemed to be in his own world. “Danny, what is it?”
She took in his set jaw and the change in his eyes. He was angry. She went to turn around to see what he was looking at, when he abruptly stood up.
“Danny?”
He looked down at her, trying to school his expression. “I just have to make a phone call I had forgotten about. I’m sorry, I’ll be right back.” She was still looking at him curiously, but he leaned down and briefly kissed her, smiling. She relaxed marginally and sat back. “Don’t stop eating for me.”
She smiled knowing he was mocking her. “You don’t have to worry about that.”
----------
Roger waved, smirking as Danny finally caught sight of him in the reflection. The sudden change in Danny’s expression almost made Roger laugh out loud. He watched as Danny stared him down.
He knew Danny wouldn’t want to make a scene on his first date with Jordan. With the mother of his baby. Not that he cared about that, but anything he could do to mess with the great Danny Tripp was well worth it.
He took a sip as Danny walked up and moved to stand in front of his table.
----------
“What the fuck are you doing here?”
Roger calmly set down his drink and used his napkin to wipe his mouth. “Such strong language Tripp. I’m just here enjoying a quiet meal.” He motioned across from him. “Won’t you join me?”
Danny could barely restrain his urge to grab Roger and physically throw him out of the restaurant. “Why are you here?”
“I told you. I’m eating. And I like this “Pick Your Own Meal” tank next to me.” He paused, taking a moment to take in the colorful fish, unaware they were soon to be eaten. “Don’t you love watching them, going about their daily lives, enjoying just swimming along, having no idea that their world is about to be turned upside down, when those selfish bitch waitresses decide to fuck them over.”
Danny sat down and leaned across the table, picking up on the meaning hidden behind Roger’s harsh words. “Watch what you’re saying Roger.”
“Why? You gonna ruin your date there Danny boy? Going to create a scene? I bet that’d play even better in the press.” Roger looked up as if he was considering something. “You know, that just might do the trick - you take me outside, and then everyone realizes that you’re a fucking addict loose cannon, and pregnant boss Jordan over there is fucking her employees. That’ll go over well.”
“What do you want?”
Roger ignored him, calmly turning back to the tank. “But don’t you just love looking at the blowfish? You know, that’s one of the most promiscuous fish on the market. Did you know that? I think it is. Maybe it’s a catfish. But I mean, with a name like blowfish, its gotta be right?” He took a moment to laugh at his joke, enjoying the tightening of Danny’s jaw. “Very promiscuous. Goes from male blowfish to blowfish, luring them in, having her way with them, and then fucking them over and moving on. Although, I hear the blowing is pretty good.” Danny stood up abruptly, drawing some attention. “Better watch out Dan, they move on to the next one to fuck pretty fast.”
Danny leaned in, grabbing Roger by the lapels. “You say one more thing about her…”
“Is there a problem here gentlemen?”
The waiter walked up, standing next to Danny as he held Roger up slightly out of his seat. Danny didn’t let go, and glared at Roger for a few more seconds before dropping him back into the seat.
“No, no problem waiter,” Roger said, straightening his jacket and smiling at the waiter. “This gentleman here just was wondering as to the durability of my jacket. I was just telling him that it never gives up. Always a force to be reckoned with.” Danny got the insinuation, and still hadn’t said anything, but just stood next to the waiter, fuming at Roger.
Roger smiled then at Danny. “So, I’ll see you soon then. Enjoy the rest of your meal.”
Danny walked away without saying anything else, and took a quick detour to the bathroom to cool himself down. He wet his face and took some calming breaths. His mind focused on Jordan waiting for him, until he was ready to go back to the table.
Danny walked up from behind her and placed a hand on her shoulder before he slid back into the booth. “Hey, what took so long?”
“You ordered more?” Danny tried misdirection, hoping she didn’t bring it back up.
“Yeah, you said you were taking me to an all-you-can-eat place. Not that I’m complaining, but if you’re paying, the fact that this isn’t one isn’t going to stop me.”
He smiled, trying to get back into the mood. “Well, I seem to recall a rather demanding request for sukiyaki. I think there might have even been tears shed? I can’t quite recall, but I’m pretty sure there was at least-“
“Oh, shut up.” She said jamming another forkful of rice into her mouth. “You carry around a child and then you can lecture me about cravings.”
“I’ve carried plenty of kids. And I’ve never wanted pickles and peanut butter. I even used one of those kid carriers once...”
Jordan threw her fortune cookie at him and he laughed as he caught it before it hit him in the face. “Violent too.”
They shared a smile before he turned back to his now cold meal. After a few bites, he happened to look up again, trying to notice if Roger had left yet.
In the mirror Danny caught his eye, and stopped eating, as he watched Roger dump some sugar on the table. He lowered his fork and Roger looked back up, giving Danny a grin before grabbing his straw and pretending to do lines off of the table.
Danny dropped his fork and clenched his jaw, trying to get past it. “Danny?”
He looked over to Jordan who had been watching him. “What’s going on? Are you okay?”
“Yeah. I’m fine, I was just thinking about-“
“Oh!” Jordan gasped, surprised.
“What? What is it?” Danny turned to her frantically, forgetting all about Roger.
“Give me your hand.”
“What?” Danny looked at her like she was crazy. She just gasped in pain and she wants to hold hands?
“Danny, give me your hand.”
“Why?”
Giving up, she grabbed his hand and placed it on her belly. Danny looked confused for a second more, before he felt it.
“Is that…?”
Jordan smiled and intertwined her fingers with his. “Yep.” She looked back at him and laughed out loud at the excited expression on his face.
He felt another kick. “Does that hurt?”
“Sometimes. It’s mainly just weird.”
He put his other hand on her stomach and slid closer. She smiled at the awe on his face as he stared at her belly. Finally he looked up at her and caught her gaze.
“You’re amazing,” he whispered before leaning in and brushing his lips against hers. Their hands stayed intertwined on her stomach, but his free hand came up to lightly rest on her cheek and hers went into the curls at the back of his neck.
----------
Roger threw his bills down onto the table when he saw Jordan pull Tripp closer. They seemed perfect together and he hated it.
Jordan had broken up his marriage and he hated Danny Tripp with a passion. Why did they both have to be so happy?
----------
Jordan moved until she was almost on top of him, her hand on his neck pulling him in closer to deepen their kiss. She never knew kissing someone could be this perfect, but kissing Danny was a whole new experience. He knew just when to exert more pressure, just when to back off, and how to make it completely wonderful. She moaned, but pulled back before they got out of hand.
Breathing heavily they stared deeply at each other and it took all of Danny’s willpower not to tell her again that he loved her. Tonight had been perfect - at least, the moments with her - and he wasn’t about to make it awkward by pushing too far too fast.
She smiled, and pulled him out of the booth.
“You ready to go then I guess?” Danny wasn’t sure what to think of her abrupt desire to leave, but refused to let himself read too much into it.
“Is that okay?” Jordan looked down at his half-eaten meal and wondered if they were leaving too soon. To be truthful, she just couldn’t wait to get him into the car and get her lips back on his.
“Yeah, that’s fine. Come with me to pay?” He led her by the hand over to the register and let her lead him out to the car.
“What now?” he asked, reaching to pull the keys out of his pocket.
Before he could get them out, Jordan pushed him against the car and brought her lips to his again. He moaned and pulled her in closer, turning them so he was pinning her up against the door. He took a step in, putting his leg between hers and bringing their bodies as close together as he could with her tummy in the way. Jordan thought about how she had wanted to do this the other night and smiled against his mouth.
“What?” he pulled back for a second, taking in her smirk.
“You.” She quickly kissed him one more time and reached in his pocket to pull out his keys. He groaned and she smiled, dangling them in front of him while he tried to remember how to breathe.
Taking them from her hand he shakily unlocked her door, and they settled themselves in.
“I had a great time tonight Danny.”
He smiled, knowing that the night was over for them. “I’m glad.”
She leaned in one more time to kiss him and they pulled back smiling.
“Let me take you to the NBS ball.”
The change in Jordan’s expression wiped the grin right off of his face.
