10/28: I was leaving the house at lunch to go back to work and it jerked hard into drive and then wouldn't shift up at all. I pull over just about a block up the road and it won't go into reverse. Now there's smoke coming out from under the hood. So I pop the hood and it looks like sonethings splattered on the bottom front of the engine.
Shit. The transmission's shot.
In making phone calls, I notice that I've left a nice trail of transmission fluid behind me, and it's thick enough to lead me to believe that I'm looking at all of the transmission fluid leading up to the car. I manage to get it pushed entirely off the road and walk back to the house to await the tow truck, I get what I need out of the car, and wouldn't you know it? I've left a 40 lb bag of dog food in the trunk and the plan was to bring it in this evening. Well, I trek back to the house with the bag on my shoulder.
The car's at Saturn now, and we may have another shop work on it, depending on what needs to be done. We just can't afford a car payment now, so it's getting it fixed as the option left to us.
I'm currently waiting on Enterprise to come pick me up so I can rent a car.
10/31 UPDATE: I was going to let Penny tell the resolution of this story, but she got distracted by dogs on pumpkins, so here's the resolution.
We'd had some work done a couple of months ago that went bad. They were under warranty and so the problem got fixed at no charge. Whew!
