figuring out a movie

Since Q got me thinking about Little Women again and thus Gabriel Byrne, I remembered there was another movie I've seen him in, older than Little Women. I know it was from before, because when LW came out, I recognized the name. I went digging through IMDB under his name to try to figure out this movie. I'm not counting Quest for Camelot since that was in 98 and not live action. The closest I can come to the movie I'm thinking of is Into the West. I'm not sure if that is it, because I don't remember the whole traveling thing, but it sounds like it could be vaguely familiar. I may have only watched the beginning of it, because I was with my family visiting some people and it came on tv.

It didn't sound quite right for the story line I was remembering so I putzed around some more on IMDB. I looked up "white horse", but none of those titles sounded right, though the new Secret of Moonacre sounds familiar. I might have read the book or at least picked it up and read the back. I finally thought to type in "white stallion" and scored. The Moon Stallion is the story I was thinking of at least in part. It is listed as a tv series but I remember it as a movie. SO I'm still not a hundred percent sure I'm not still blending in bits of other stories. But the description of the story is right on. Maybe I just got to see the whole thing back to back or something. It says it was 6 episodes of 25 min each, so that's possible. That would make it roughly 3 hours long.

I'm thinking now I probably did watch the beginning of Into the West. I don't remember most of the story, but the description of the beginning rings a bell. I figured this out as I was writing this entry. I had come up with ItW and SoM, and was going to ask for help to figure out the main part of what I was remembering. I hope I can watch The Moon Stallion again even though it is about as old as me. It won't have the crispness of modern movie making, and will probably feel silly in story line at times, but I wanna see it anyway.

I need to dig up a few other old movies and have an old movie night. I want to find The Song Spinner too and share it. It doesn't have much depth in the story line but it had a lovely bit of music that was especially striking as there was little noise through the whole movie. The story for that one is that the king banned all song and noise from his kingdom. There are the Noise Police and are they strict. The king started the ban, but the NP's took it way beyond the original intent. It's set in a far northern type of kingdom, lots of winter. In spring the sun finally returns. The girl learns from a mysterious woman that this year if they don't follow the old (banned) traditions of singing the sun up, it will never return. The girl with some help from her younger brother and the woman find a way to get everyone to sing despite the Noise Police who try to squash their attempt. It's a quaint old story, but I like it.
