Yesterday I had to go to a "Transgender Awareness" discussion at work. My library got a $3,000 grant for some organization, and one of the conditions was that every employee had to take the class. It was pretty pointless, I thought. I mean, the basically said to be polite to transgendered people, and I do that already. What, do they think that I'm going to say to a TG person "Ewww, go away you horrible person."? The speaker was a young lady in her mid twenties, and was evidently a lesbian. She talked a little bit about labels, and mention a friend of hers named "Erin" who was born female, but thought of herself as male. Because of this, Erin preffered to be mentioned in the third person, as in "Erin went to Erin's place to get Erin's books" instead of "She went to her place to get her books" Sounds a bit akward, don't it? After a few group discussions we were allowed to go back to work. As I said, it was ok. but pointless. Still, beats dealing with angry patrons :)
