'I waited 19 years for this?', she thought...

Dear Mr. Spielberg,

First and foremost, I am a fan of yours, and have been for a very, very long time.  Close Encounters of the Third Kind was the first of yours I saw in a theater, and it has always held a very special place in my sci-fi loving heart.  Raiders of the Lost Ark will forever be the movie I have seen the most times EVER in a movie theater (and the one I can most readily quote).  I could go on, but I think you get the point.

I have just one thing to say to you, and it's something I think all of us who have reached a certain age can understand -

If your heart isn't in it, you just shouldn't do it.

I mean that with the deepest respect, sir.  For, you see, I finally saw Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull today.  And as much as I enjoyed seeing my favorite character (and actor) on the screen again, something was lacking.  The technical term me and the significant other came up with (after some discussion)  was 'Umph'.  The movie just didn't make me care.

And that makes me sad.  Because your movies (including the ones you produce) have always made me care.

I realize that you had to work with what you were given, what was written for you.  And that I blame squarely on the shoulders of Mr. Lucas.  But I wish you would have said 'No' at some point.  Or maybe said it a little louder.

I just say, at this point, let's put this all behind.  And I'm looking forward to whatever you are doing next.

Peace.

For those who may have been wondering:

Yes, an anime reference did come up during Crystal Skull today.  He beat me to it, this time...

(character is disturbing what appears to be an unwrapped mummy.  first thing to appear is armor-covered legs...)

Him:  AL!  He found Al!
Me: *snicker*

We are so hopeless...

snark, rant, movies
