"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" by Douglas Adams. (And forget watching the movie. That will not count.)
And why that one? For one, it's short - so it is somewhat easy to get through. And it is funny - especially when trying to explain the science of what's going on...or the impossibility of getting a really good cup of tea...or the reasons why Vogon poetry is horrific, but still isn't the worst in the Universe.
Not to mention the economics of planet making.
