Quarter 2 reading

Jul 28, 2009 18:20

I have been horrible about posting so this is the second quarter of reading. I'm slightly behind but not far and I hope to have tons of reading done before school begins again.   Alot of the books are rereads or usually reviewed books here so I've skipped reviewing those, all reviews are available upon request though.  Much of the other reading is due to study of the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s.  Please excuse the titles, I realize some are offensive but altering them seems unethical or immoral or something.

11.       The Amores - Ovid.

12.       Nigger Heaven - Carl Van Vechten.  1920’s novel is written to uncover the culture of New York underground in the prohibition time when Harlem was hopping with the chic and the ambitious.

13.       When Washington was in Vogue - Edward Christopher Williams. Originally titled The Letters of Davy Carr, this story is told through letters between Davy and his WWI buddy, Bob, exploring his relations with the socialites of Washington DC, including the family from which he rents a room.

14.       The Harlem Renaissance: Hub of African American Culture 1920-1930 - Steven Watson.  Pretty much an overview of all things Harlem Renaissance.  If you want a broad overview, this is a great resource.

15.       Naughty Neighbor- Janet Evanovich.

16.       The Giver - Lois Lowry.  If you haven’t read this, read it already!

17.       The Locket - Richard Paul Evans.

18.       The Carousel - Richard Paul Evans.  A sequel to The Locket

19.       Wide Sargasso Sea - Jean Rhys.  Essentially a prequel of Jane Eyre written in the 1960s.

20.   Skellig - Matt Almond.  A young adult read of the Gothic tradition.

21.   I Just Want My Pants Back - David Rosen.  A hilariously written book about a guy who has a one night stand who takes his favorite pair of pants and doesn’t give them back.  Very  “High Fidelity”-esque in some ways.

22.   My Sister’s Keeper - Jodi Picoult.

23.   Finger Licking Fifteen -Janet Evanovich.

24.   Curious Case of Benjamin Button - F. Scott Fitzgerald.

25.   Love Stories in this Town - Amanda Eyre Ward.  A bunch of short stories, mostly about marriage and pregnancy, and the stress that some things cause.  It took me only a day to read.  Her writing style is great and even though the subject matter is repeated, the stories are diverse enough to keep it from being annoyingly redundant.

26.   Girls With Slingshots - Danielle Corsetto. I read them online but they're published in two volumes. Very girl oriented, hilarious, and entertaining.  All on her website: www.daniellecorsetto.com
