Storms and Yesterday

Jun 12, 2008 09:23

Sunday I left for work like a normal person and everything was fine until a customer happened to mention "Hey I hope you guys have shelter or something because this storm's coming up bad and you don't even see the worst of it."  Sure enough, within a few minutes, a downpour came down so hard and the wind so rough that the rain was coming sideways. I was outside when it started, trying to get one of the pumps unhooked so I could bring it inside. I was literally squatting next to a pickup truck staying perfectly dry.  That is, until I ran inside again to finish getting things put away in the shed.  In the meantime, the newly  highschool-graduated girl I was working with had her parents calling and freaking out because tornados were spotted in the area and they were freaking her out.  Luckily for me, she's level headed enough to automatically respond to orders I was giving her to make sure things were taken care of properly.

After a few minutes the storm petered down to a normal rain and then to sprinkles.  Most of the damage was done.  Trees uprooted everywhere, power lines down or entangled, houses damaged and cars crushed.  In part of my neighborhood, there was a gas leak as well as no power.  The only good thing about it is that we have a community well so we still have water when the power goes out.  It made me feel a little better that I could shower, go to the bathroom, give the dog water, cool things down, etc without having to worry about it.

Even though that was sunday afternoon, with the exception of the tree cleanup, nothing around here has really changed. It took 2 days for them to get most of the stop lights working again, they've only been able to cut the amount of outages in half over 4 days and to my knowledge, my house still doesn't have electricity.  Then again I spent the night at Trent's last night, one of the few places in metro Detroit that kept power, because I wanted to watch the Top Chef finale and I wasn't going to let a power outage get in the way of my favorite cooking show.  It was fantastic to be able to shower without candlelight and be able to take my time.  Most of all, it was great to be able to sleep with cool air and no generator waking me up at 6:00am.... just Trent's alarm blaring at 6:09 and then 6:18 (he snoozed).

The funny thing is I got here (work) in better time from Trent's house 45 mins away than I normally do from my house only 5 mins away.  I am not sure whether to be glad for work since I can check email and chat with people I haven't talked with since Sunday or to frustrated that I have to work because I would rather be home curled up, napping if I want, reading and getting some housework done.  But alas, here I am (exhausted because Trent got me up so early and the drive time meant no going back to sleep after he left)  and I have my books to read.  I've been on a reading frenzy -5 books in nearly as many days. Not overly fantastic but still pretty darn cool.

This weekend is Father's Day events and graduation parties. Possibly work if it doesn't hail in the thunderstorms we're supposed to get tonight.  Here's hoping.  Cheers.
