Some people have asked me..'why the hell are you spending money fixing up a 30 something year old trailer that your only renting????' Well, my response to that has always been, and will always be..why not? Why do I want to sit on the shitter and stare at 70's wallpaper in my bathroom and carpet of all things in the bathroom? Why would I want to sleep in a bedroom with a huge rotted wall next to a window that was broken out (and since repaired) in a large tornado afew years back? Instead, I spend alittle every month fixing up the place..do I get paid to fix it up? sometimes it comes out of my rent, sometimes not...but none the less, it looks much better.
I remodeled my guest bathroom afew months ago, ripped out that soggy, rotting carpet and layed down tiles. I painted over that 70's flowerpower wallpaper with a nice ivory white paint. Removed that horrible yellow plastic medicine cabinet (I think it used to be white..at least the back was) and replaced it with a nice oak mirrored medicine cabinet, actually hung real towel racks, had my cracked bathrub replaced (for free), fixed the window in the bathroom so it actually opens. and replaced my light switch with a motion switch..so when I get up at 2am in the morning to take a leak, it turns on, walk out and it turns off.
The spare bedroom that I just finished painting, will be turned into a workshop. Im planning on replacing the carpet (landlord will pay for it) instead of this old stained brown carpet, Im going to replace the chest of drawers that's built into the side of the room (it's some kind of prefab fake wood) and replace it with real hardwood so I don't have to worry about every time I drop something in the drawer, that it wont' fall through to the next drawer). Already have new blinds, putting new AC unit in..fixin' to go 'home automation' for that room too..replacing the wall outlet with one of those X10 units to power from my computer, same with the light switch and other wall outlet. That way I can crank the AC and lights on from in here before I go in there and have a nice cool room..and when I go to bed, if I haven't been in there in awhile, just hit all off to kill all the lights/power in there.
I have no plans for the living room just yet. I thougth about replacing the carpet with a nice dark red and painting the walls a hunter green..but haven't decided just yet. Now the bedroom..that needs new carpet (landlord will pay for) and fixin' to have that big gapping rotted hole patched up with some prefab dark wood wall panels, probably get another bed while Im at it, oh and an AC unit in there too cause it's too damn hot to sleep in there at night.
Outside back yard, planning on building a security fence (at least 8feet tall) so I don't have to look at that ragged junked out yard next to me (my new neighbors seem to be putting their beat up, broken down, rusted out cars where I can see them every time I walk out back), and don't have to see the welder behind my house. That way my dog can run around the back yard off of a chain (once again landlord will take out what I paid in it, in rent for that month). Also I can work in the gun room without people peering in and seein' all the firearms I have laying working on before put in a safe. I think if I spend the next few years in this same place, a shed would be nice to build later on to place a bunch of shit in there.
Also this summer if I come across a nice chunk of change, I plan on building a deck that extends enough that I can actually sit out back and BBQ (instead of just having a 5x5 slab of wood with rickety steps that I have now).
Whew, so that's my plans. Lets see what I can get accomplished. Work doesn't pay me enough to do all of this work, so Im also making $$ doing computer consulting around here for $25/hr, and mom hired me onto one of her computer companies that she owns, to do tech support & add/delete accounts for $20/hr. She said I will have more work than I can shake a stick at, so that should also keep me busy and well financed.
Also once I get the workshop setup, I plan on buying some cheep POS 870's, fixing them up and selling for alittle extra profit (not much it seems, probably get $100 more than what I put into it), and probably start on AR-15's. Plenty of profit from co-workers looking for patrol shotguns and rifles. Why spend $500 on a brand new 870 with wood stocks, 5 shots, shitty firing pin (stock 870 firing pins prone to break) and crappy action...when you could spend $400 on a used but great condition synthetic stock, reworked action, new firing pin, mag extention to 8 shots, 18inch barrel (instead of those long 28 inch), and ghost ring sights. Which is compleatly feasable for me to build for about $300, and sell for $400 easy.
Anyway, Im rambling. Not really slapping this in my journal expecting someone to read it, but more of a..go back afew years and see what I have accomplished and where I was. Kinda like what I do when I look back at my first journal entry when I was working at macromedia in california (think this journal goes back to 2001 or 2002)
