the veronicas went electro

my life is now complete.

when i opened itunes music store on wednesday afternoon in a fit of boredom, i didn't actually expect to find anything i'd be interested in.. gone are the days when i will blow $1.69 on any old shit just to fill up my iPod - those kinds of tracks can be obtained by other means.

my eye was drawn to a familiar artist in the Just Added section, but i had never even heard of the track before. i clicked on the link, knowing full well that the veronicas are a certified rock act, who've built a massive fan base by shunning the thudding bass and synthesised effects of pop music. so imagine my surprise when the preview loaded: is that a bass beat? a synth? vocal effects? did i click the wrong button?? have i slipped into a parallel universe?? no! THE VERONICAS HAVE GONE ELECTRO!! and they've absolutely fucken killed it. it makes sense - their remixes were always WAY better than the originals. 'hook me up' has come out of nowhere, with very little promotion, but i expect it to race up the charts in the next few weeks. in the immortal words of Hawks: "it's a creeper, but it's got legs".

someone's been listening to gwen stefani's 'what you waiting for', and paying attention to the tour de force that is madonna's 'confessions on a dancefloor'. the driving 4/4 beat and dark minor chord progession push the song along while the girls deliver their standard strong vocal performance, and in the background, echos of a 90s techno piano can be heard. the lyrics talk about being sick of your life, and over all your friends, wanting to escape and have a fresh start.. the feeling that you're just a person stuck in your body, completely disconnected from the things you've done and the image others have built around you. overall, it's a 9/10 - it's not 'hung up', but it's the next best thing. i'm just pissed that neither bas nor i got to it first; we would have owned that bitch.

so, for the first time since '4ever', i'm filled with optimism about the girls' future.. it's not just going to be an endless string of mediocre 'everything i'm not'-style releases until their chart performance dies quietly. they're not afraid to try something new and there's something really cool about that. plus they're smokin' fucken hot. and they're aussies. OI OI OI!! haha!
