WOW! TODAY IS OUR DAUGHTER ALEXIS' BIRTHDAY. AND A WEEK AGO WE CELEBRATED OUR 50TH ANNIVERSARY. AND YESTERDAY ED CELEBRATED HIS 50 ANNIVERSARY OF HIS GRADUATION FROM BROWN. WHAT A FLOW OF LIFE HAS ROLLED DOWN THE OUR RIVER THROUGH THE YEARS. WHO KNEW WE WOULD BE HERE IN MISSOURI IN 2008 WITH A FIELD FLOURISHING WITH AN ABUNDANCE OF GRAPE BUDS...PROMISES FOR THE END OF SUMMER. EVERY MORNING WE HAVE STRAWBERRIES FROM THE GARDEN, AND THE LETTUCE AND SPINACH ARE UP FOR NIBBLING. WE HAVE A FAMILY OF BUNNIES IN THE TOP FIELD THAT WANDER ABOUT AND MUNCH ON THE THINGS POPPING UP. THEY SEEM TO ENJOY THE NEW ASPARAGUS SPROUTS. YUM! AH, YES... THE RASPBERRIES THAT WERE GIVEN TO US BY A FRIEND HAVE ESTABLISHED THEMSELVES SUFFICIENTLY TO HAVE SEVERAL VINES LADEN WITH SMALL GREEN FRUITS. IT IS THE PROMISE OF SPRING THAT ENCOURAGES US TO DO THE WORK IT TAKES TO GET TO HARVEST.
WE HAVE YET TO PLANT THAT ORCHARD WE PROMISED OURSELVES..... STILL HUNTING FOR THE RIGHT TREES.
A FIG AND SOME APPLES AND PEARS AND WHO KNOWS!
TODAY WE HAVE TO SPRAY AGAINST FUNGICIDE THAT ROLLS ACROSS THE VINEYARDS LIKE WILD FIRE IF WE DON'T CONTROL IT.... WE HAD AN INCREDIBLE LIGHTENING STORM TWO NIGHTS AGO. NATURE'S BRILLIANT LIGHT SHOW! AND JUST ENOUGH RAIN TO WASH AWAY THE SPRAYS.... THAT WE DON'T LIKE TO USE TOO MUCH...
LIFE IS A BALANCE HERE... WHEN WE DON'T SPRAY WE LOSE OUR GRAPES. WE TRIED THE ORGANIC ENERGIES, AND THEY WORK IN OUR VEGETABLE GARDENS. WE LIVE IN BALANCE WITH THE TINY CREATURES THAT COME AND MUNCH LUNCH AND DON'T SPRAY FOR WEEDS... WE PULL OR MULCH AS NEEDED. BUT THE FUNGI HAVE THE UPPER HAND IN MISSOURI.... SO WE FOLLOW THE ADVICE OF OUR LOCAL EXPERTS AND USE AS LITTLE SPRAYS AS WE CAN AND STILL MAINTAIN OUR VINEYARD.
I'M GOING TO TRY TO GET BETTER PHOTOS ON THIS SITE...FOR ANYONE WHO MIGHT LIKE TO SEE OUR GREEN LAND HERE IN THE OZARKS. HERE ARE A COUPLE... ED AND THE POOCH ALI IN OUR TOP FIELD IN EARLY SPRING. LAZY DAYS WERE JUST ABOUT OVER AND THE WORK BEGINNING... WE ARE OUT IN THE GARDEN AND FIELDS EVERY DAY.
AND IN OUR KITCHEN BOTTLING OUR FIRST WINE FROM LAST YEARS SMALL HARVEST. CHAMBOURCIN D'AUX OZARKS... A LOVELY FRUITY MELLOW RED.
