Oh, god, I'm tired. I got enough sleep last night, even slept in a bit as I
decided to forgo exercising this morning. I got plenty of unanticipated
exercise this morning, and am winded as hell from chasing a shoplifter all
over campus. Yep, one of those guys who is wrong from the start, but
couldn't be diverted and sprinted out of the store. I was on the phone with
911 while running between Pearl Alley and High Street a few times, keeping
visual contact with the old guy, but lost him around 17th. The two squad
cars didn't find him either. And yes, I said old guy, in his 50's at least.
Tall, though, and skinny, and f-ing fast. He's hit us before, and lost my
boss who pursued him that time (she's 5 years younger and thin, so I don't
feel that bad that he got away from my older, fatter ass. Still.) I filed
a police report, and about 10 minutes later get taken a few blocks down High
in a squad car to hopefully make a positive i.d. They'd found a man sitting
on his jacket shaving off his beard, and figured he might be trying to
change his appearance. It wasn't our thief. Frustrating. I did get one of
the books back that he'd taken -- it had fallen out of his jacket in the
alley and was still mostly unscathed.
I'm ready to go home and have a nap. And then after my nap, I'd watch the
last three episodes of "Dexter" on DVD -- J. & I watched four episode from
season one this weekend. It is a terrific show -- and considering it's all
about serial killers and is on a pay channel, it's not that gruesome or
gratuitous in the violence. It's not taking typical turns of plot or
character either. We did more than watch tv yesterday. Made the 11 am
service at church, which was very good. Had a very nice brunch at "The
Kitchen Lounge" which included bourbon french toast, very ripe and flavorful
cantaloupe, and other eggy bacony sausagey gravy types of things. And good
coffee.
We'd planned on maybe taking the dog for "dog day" at the Wexner Center, but
decided not to as the temperature started climbing. Instead we washed the
dog -- she is so ridiculously small when her hair is all wet. And very
patient, but not at all enjoying the bath. She was not as freaked out by
the hair dryer as she has been in the past -- although after 45 mintues I
felt like I'd inhaled enough hair to stuff a pillow. Hair clouds had formed
and were raining hair on us below. Took her out on the porch to dry in the
sunlight a bit more. And our cat just attacked her, out of nowhere. We
guess that he decided she smelled funny and was on top of her, trying to
bite her neck. Now, she only outweighs him by 5-7 pounds, and was just
trying to get away. I snatched her up out of his reach, and J. got him
inside with only one tooth grazing his hand. Our cat is a biter when he's
mad. The dog was shaking, her little legs trembling on my lap. We locked
the cats downstairs for a while. I kept an eye on them while I did a few
loads of laundry.
I'd just let the cats upstairs before I started down to do the last load.
J. heard me scream all the way upstairs -- he had music on pretty loudly --
as I came upon a snake in the basement. It was a good 12 inches, and he was
a good boyfriend and took it outside. That was enough animal drama for the
whole day. Thank god one of the cats didn't find it.
I finished reading "Into the Wild." It wasn't a great book, structurally,
but I liked it. He expanded the story in a few ways that added a lot to it.
I can't relate at all to the kid in it, or to the author, in their pursuits
of proving themselves against nature, and taking life-threatening risks to
make it. I also read a short collection of comics by Adrian Tomine (sp?)
that I liked quite a bit. The stories atarted and ended in unexpected
places. I dug the art, and the mood of it. I'd like to check out more of
his work. God, that day didn't seemed so packed until I wrote about it.
Let's hope today remains boring!
