I remember thinking at one time that it would be a cold day in hell before I'd write an original character in a fanfiction. As far as I saw it, OC's fell into two categories: those like Teles from niamh_sama's OGAM who you just wished were canon characters so that you could get more of them, and the rest. The rest generally being the Mary and Gary Stus of ( Read more... )

*cuddles her Kadonomaru* So, what does "Rondo" mean?

It's a musical term for a form from the Classical period. The main theme (which is usually a fairly distinct tune and in the tonic key) is varied, but returned to several times in the movement or piece. Usually it's ABACA or ABACABA form.

The reason I chose the name was that I liked the idea of a pattern where you keep returning to the original theme. It fits the story well. And I'm a nerd. And I can't write without music, so why not give it a nod in the title?

sounds cool. I love a good oc, as long as the main interest still lays in Kagome and Sesshomaru

Yeah, it'll be S/K (my first, unless you count a little kiss drabble), but it's going to be a long road getting there. I don't think it'd be worth reading if Kagome just magically jumped ship from Inuyasha to Sesshoumaru or if Sesshoumaru was suddenly receptive towards her advances (because, face it, canon Sess would rip his own tongue out before he'd initiate anything with her).

The OC's definitely won't be stealing the spot light. In fact, Michiko isn't even going to be on the same continent for at least the beginning of the story, and Takeshimaru doesn't seem the type do more than grunt a few words, then stalk off.

*snicker* Welcome to the world of OC ownership! So tell me... is Take-boy a bish? Worth pinning up against a wall with his shirt off? If they're gonna invade your fic, they might as well be good-looking!

Yep, that's him. Though I can't say you'd be successful trying that...I gather he'd rather be the one doing the pinning, friendly or otherwise.

*points up* And that was me. One day, I'll bother paying attention to the details like logging in.

People write reasonably good minor OC's all the time. They're called villains.

lol Actually, neither of mine are villains. But you do have a point there.

Don't sweat it, from time to time and when there is no canon character fitting and available for the particular role, you need an OC. As long as they stick to their role and don't steal the main chara's limelight, all is well.

I have long ago decided that I don't like designing OC, so I am fairly safe in that respect.

From what I have heard, I have taken a liking to your Takeshimaru. Bad-tempered men are fun to watch ^_~

Yeah, I'm still getting a feel for him, and I don't entirely know what his role is ultimately going to be, but I like him so far. He's an interesting one. ^.^

Y'know, discussing OC may be worth a thread on Z! - if it doesn't already exist. I don't mean a theoretical essay like Niamh's article on Mary Sues, I mean a more practical approach of 'This is my OC, this is why I needed him/her and how I designed him/her."

After all, OC are custom-made to fill a gap in the staff needed for your plot. Might be interesting to know what went into his or her creation.

Hmm...That's a good idea, actually. I think it might also be a good way to keep newbie writers (like myself) from accidentally going Sue/Stu with their OC's. I know I'd hate it if I did that, so having a place where y'all could sound the warning bells for me would be great.
