Jogging in Oakland...

My "sister" and I flew out to California for a college friend's wedding, so have decided to treat ourselves with this little girl's trip. We've left both of our partners, gotten a ridiculous suite overlooking a cove. We also somehow were able to rent a Mustang and have enjoyed zooming all over this hilly city.

A new development in our friendship is that she decided to undertake a healthy lifestyle change. With FitBit in tow, she religiously logs calories and steps. I've been decidedly more laid back, food journaling occasionally to see if I'm on track and focusing more on movement. Since there's a little walking path, we dolled up in sneakers and decided to get in a little bit of exercise.

As we were walking, my legs wanted me to run. She hadn't jogged since high school. I think it had been several months for me since I've been predominantly focusing on exercise classes and kinda blew up my office, so the treadmill has been out of commission. I asked if she wanted to jog, since I wanted to.

So we did.

I went further than I thought I could.  We set little markers for ourselves: to that trashcan, between the benches, to the pier. We jogged in intervals, and I sprinted at least twice. I got a little side stitch, and my breathing got a bit ragged, but my feet kept pushing. My knee only acted up twice, which could have been a road running/stride issue. But we did it.

It's awesome to me that this can now be part of our friendship. We've done a spin class together, which was a bit much for her and her asthma, but we did that, too. She's talking of taking me to water aerobics, which has always interested me, so we'll see how that works out.

We lamented about coming here for this wedding, but it's turning into a mental health vacation. We've talked about living healthily, getting our minds right, transportation,  finances and what we do, and the fact that I resigned from my third job this week. I'm trying to prioritize my health and want to do other things in the morning besides chasing that client, and I can't meet their mandate of carrying four more clients. I turned in my resignation and will be able to focus on classes/exercise, making healthy meal prep snacks/meals, and getting my home in order.

Though we were dreading it, this trip is turning into a healthy adventure for both of us...

... I still can't believe we woggled!

mental health, woggling
