It seems that John Duigan wanted to shoot a film about the love and responsibility which could be tested by war. The action happens at 1930th: begins in England and continues in France and Spain
Gilda Besse (Charlize Theron), the daughter of French rich man and American mother, is extravagant, smart and famous girl wastes her life studying in Cambridge University. Once she appears in the room of 1st year student Guy Malyon (Stuart Townsend). He was so kind that he offered to Gilda to stay at his place for a night. She accepted his proposal. Of course Guy fell in love with her. And of course he wanted the reciprocal feeling, but Gilda didn’t belong to anyone. She was free and she didn’t like owners. However she liked Guy cause of his frankness and sincerity. So there started their connection interrupted sometimes by Gilda’s disappearances. Guy remembered and liked and wanted her in spite of everything. It reminds the story of Mario Vargas Llosa - “The bad girl” (not so epic but close to Llosa’s story).
One day Guy found Gilda in Paris and she introduced him to Mia (Penelope Cruz), Spanish strip dancer who was mutilated by one villain. Penelope succeeded to play a defective girl. Thank for it. But nothing more for Mia. Ah, Guy and Mia and Gilda acquainted to each other and spent some time together enjoying their company. And finally War mixed in their relations. As conscience man Guy Malyon went to the front in Spain and Mia went there too (because she was real patriot and honest girl; oh, whole-hearted nature!). Gilda stayed in Paris and continued to live freely and carelessly.
The second sense of film is relation of responsibility and feeling. Responsibility forced to do to the front (Guy) but feeling delayed at home (Gilda). War was shown badly, feelings were shown a bit better. So, feelings are better than wars -) Gilda wouldn’t be herself if she didn’t take part in war at all! .. How pity that she died… But if the hero of Sharlize wouldn’t die I would suspect something wrong in film. Unhappy end justified the film.
What it was valuable in this picture? I suppose the phrase (approximately) about that it needs to try to act, to do something to change the state of affairs (something like that Guy said arguing with Gilda)
And of course Sharlize was beautiful as usual! You can watch this film due to she
