A Trouble Shared

“Shepherd?”

“River?” Book looked up startled at her sudden appearance, “What can I do for you?”

“She needs wise counsel. Only you have the necessary knowledge and skills to answer such a complicated conundrum.”

“Well, I’ll do my best. Sit down and tell me all about it.”

“She was just a girl. The bits wouldn’t stay down and the words came out all jumbled up.”

“Ah, that was you when you first came onboard Serenity.”

River grinned, “Knew you’d understand. Now the she is a real girl. The bits stay down and the words come out right. She is understood.”

“Yes, River, you’re much better now, getting better all the time.”

“Now two rivals are competing for her.”

“Who are these rivals, the Blue Hands and the Captain?”

River shook her head. “Captain Mal is one, the other is hurting. He feels he’s not good enough for the girl. Didn’t mean to peek, feelings were all around him, waiting to be seen and understood.”

“Is it Simon?”

River gave Book one of her ‘Can’t believe you’re being so dense’ looks. “Jayne, silly!”

“Jayne and Mal. Are you saying that they’re both competing for your affections?”

River clapped her hands, “Knew you’d understand. Who to choose? Both good men in different ways.”

“River, I can’t choose for you. You have to decide yourself.”

“How?”

“Well, spend time with each of them, and ask them to tell you why you should choose them. Make it clear there’s a choice to be made, and that you haven’t decided yet. Divide your time between them equally, so they each have a fair and equal chance. Your heart will soon let you know which one you prefer. If you need any more help and advice, my door is always open, and you could always ask Kaylee, Inara or Zoe, for a female perspective...”

“Thank you, Shepherd. You’ve put my feet on a good path. I can see the way clearly ahead. Just walk the road shown and read the signals.”

“Come to me if there’s anything you’re unsure of and if either of them ask you to do something you’re not comfortable with.”

“Oh Shepherd Book, are you going to be my Daddy, now Captain Mal cannot?”

“Well, I guess I am,” he grinned. This would give him the authority need to keep River’s prospective suitors in line.

River reached up and kissed the Shepherd on the cheek in thanks. She ran out as fast as she could, leaving Book wondering what to do with this delicate situation

“Jayne?”

Starting, he dropped the barbell safely into it’s holder before sitting up on the weight bench. “Gorram it, River. Ya shouldn’t sneak up on a man using these weights; he could do himself a damage.”

“Sorry Jayne,” she whispered.

“I din’t mean ta snap at ya, River girl.”

She grinned, “You called her a pet name.”

“What, calling ya River girl?” he asked, “Ain’t nothing.”

“It’s everything,” she said, throwing her arms around his neck, “You called her by her real name.” She trembled against him.

Awkwardly, he ran a hand down her back whispering, “Shhh, River girl. ‘S okay.”

Pulling back, he cupped her cheek as he looked into her eyes. Ai ya, she is so beautiful, he thought, and all I want to do is see what it would be like to kiss her.

Reading his mind, River reached her hand up behind his neck and pressed her lips against his.

For a second he froze, unable to believe that this was really happening. I have this hua li woman in my arms, and she’s kissing me. Not just kissing me, but giving me the honour of her first real kiss.

She sighed as he drew her closer and kissed her back. His hands wrapped around her slim waist, his firm lips gently easing hers apart. Gasping as he ran his tongue across her lips, darting it into her open mouth, she responded in kind, their tongues teasing and exploring eagerly.

Jayne eased their bodies apart, smiling when River whimpered as he forced her to stopped kissing him.

“I had no idea kissing on the mouth would feel so good,” she grinned, “No wonder Wash and Zoe, Kaylee and my brother can’t stop doing it.”

“Ya know, a lot of it has ta do with the partner ya choose,” he teased.

“In that case, I chose my partner very well.”

“Me too,” he responded, nuzzling her ear. “Ya wanna kiss some more?” he whispered.

“Uh huh,” she moaned as she pulled him back into another passionate kiss.
