I managed to get a copy of the December issue of Classic rock just in time before the new issue came out. I was pleased that Wicked Little Dolls got a good review, I'd love to see them get more press. but I was not so pleased at their big feature on 100 Greatest Rock Icons. Out of the 100, 3 (THREE!) were women --- Debbie Harry, Tina Turner, and Joni Mitchell. Now I've got no argument with most of the men on the list --- I think anyone would agree that the likes of John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain were iconic but there were a few people on the list whose own mothers would struggle to recognise them in a line-up. When I think of all the women they left out who all changed music in their own way and/or were incredibly talented (Janis Joplin, Patti Smith, Siouxsie, The Runaways, Courtney Love, Tairrie B, Lydia Lunch, Wendy O. Williams and more) then it does piss me off to reduce women's contribution to the history/culture of rock music to fucking three percent. I'm sorry but I would have thought if you were going to have 100 names you could have found space for a few more women.
