I got the book of Let The Right One in by John Ajvice Lindqvist and I really liked it. It's set in Sweden in the early 1980s and it's about a young boy who's being bullied. He befriends a local girl only to find out she's a vampire and her & her guardian are responsible for a series of brutal murders in the local area. It's not at all cliched or overly sentimental, the love between the two children is touching but the life they are leading is quite harsh and sad. There's also a couple of twists to the book that I don't want to reveal here (they've been omitted from the film though or substantially played down). The author was involved in the screenplay though so I read an interview with him where he agreed that he'd had to tone down certain elements to make the film. The film has had good reviews and won several prizes already. Can't wait till it opens here.
Here is a fan-made trailer for the film featuring some clips from the film.

Also finally watched Superstar, the Todd Haynes movie about Karen Carpenter (someone has very kindly posted the whole thing on YOu Tube) --- he used Barbie dolls and film clips of Miss America/Vietnam/the Holocaust before the Carpenter estate forced him to withdraw the movie from general circulation. It was OK, it made some interesting points and had some good moments although I wasn't that keen on the juxtaposition of some of the footage and it's probably one of those movies that you really only need to see once. I've got a book on the film as well. But I can't understand why more people haven't tried to use dolls to make short films.
