Another update

I got the latest issue of Details on my last expedition to Borders which was OK but far from its glory days in the mid 90s when it was one of my favourite magazines EVER. I only say this because I decided to go through some of my press cuttings. (I have about 100 files of cuttings from a huge variety of magazines spanning about 15 or 20 years plus scrapbooks as well). The one thing I noticed was how crap the fashion spreads are now. They don't seem to go in for the insane themes like they used to or have that same WOW factor. Even the women's magazines look really boring and pedestrian now, they won't take any chances with the type of photography whereas before they would do things like photograph jewellery wrapped around vegetables or stick hundreds and thousands over someone's mouth. And I do miss the themed shoots if only because I used to laugh at the deranged imagination of some of the fashion editors (for further information please see any issues of The Face especially from the mid 90s but also Details, Elle or Allure from the same period). I think the general quality of writing in most magazines has declined a lot as well.

I also got the new issue of Classic Rock which I really enjoyed (I haven't got round to listening to the free CD yet). It was mostly about lost bands and other things that are no longer around --- so there were interesting articles on the likes of Rock City Angels (who Johnny Depp played with) and Michael Des Barres and some female rocker called Karen Lawrence as well as a little mention for Cherie Currie which I really wish had been bigger. (I'm guessing they've done The Runaways in the past and I've missed it, I know they did an article on Hanoi Rocks and I'm still pissed off I missed that). There was also an article on Gogol Bordello, the gypsy punk band, I loved his quote where he was presumably dissing The Citizens Band that the model Karen Elson performs with --- I can't be Gandhi about this. I need to be che Guevara about this. And there was also a bit on NY Loose, a really great female fronted band who only did one album but are well worth checking out. Their album Year of The Rat is an absolute forgotten classic.

cherie currie, ny loose, the runaways, classic rock magazine, magazines
