Though It Would Be So Much More Convenient if Everything Were in Walking Distance

I should mention, for lack of anything better to mention, that we taught Joe how to play Duel of Ages on Monday and he picked up on it right away. Of course, he's a sharp guy, but we've been dispairing of teaching it to anyone because it's an obscure, creative-in-an-obtuse-way game.

Anywho, the fact that Joe likes it makes me hopeful that somebody else might also like it.

In other news, we're going to Pokemon States this weekend with Grim Jen and Brandon. We only convinced them to start seriously playing the game about a month (or two?) ago.

Besides States, we're just going to hang out and see the sites. Two weeks ago, we had a mini vacation at home; this weekend, we're having a vacation elsewhere. It'll be a good experience.

I was never all that keen on traveling, growing up. Essentially, I went places when my parents did, which wasn't all too often--visiting grandparents and history museums. In college--well, college WAS "traveling", to me, living in a glorified hotel room in an exotic place. I definitely wasn't keen on exploring further. My horizons were never vast. I was in Kirksville for five years, but I'm sure I didn't explore it as much as half of my fellow students did. I came back to Columbia after Truman and when showing Stephanie around, I realized I didn't know the town at all--but still wasn't all that interested in becoming more familiar with it.

My honeymoon with Stephanie was a major break from the existence of my past. I'd just never been interested in going places, but being in California with Stephanie was really exciting. I guess the whole marriage thing opened me up to "change" in the first place (you can sing about "whole new worlds" if you want), but with Stephanie, there's a spark about being in the totally unfamiliar that I've never felt before.

When I'm in the unfamiliar, I'm still my timid old self, but there's no sense of panic or dread while I'm around Steph.

I would go to another state with her. I would go to another country. That's not something the old me would have chosen, left to my own devices. Of a place to visit, I would have said "I can see it on TV, or read about it on the internet." It's just weird how excited I am, about the traveling as much or more than about the Pokemon tournament.
