Brawl News

Super Smash Bros. Brawl sold 1.4 million copies in its first week in the US, making for Nintendo's best first week US release. That's pretty impressive. Of course, to put it in perspective, Nintendo has a long way still to go if they want to beat Blizzard, which sold 2.4 million copies of World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade on it's first day of release. Of course, Burning Crusade had a lot of things going for it: first, it was an international release. Second, it was an add-on to a super-popular, addictive MMORPG that increased the level cap, ensuring that if you didn't get the expansion, you might as well have stopped playing then because your level 60 character quickly became irrelevant to the new level 70s and their l33t gear.

But yeah, Nintendo--international release. It makes the numbers bigger and your fanboys happier.

Smash Bros. Melee, in its lifetime, sold 7 million copies. According to VGChartz, Nintendo has sold a little more than 21.5 million Gamecubes, meaning nearly a third of Gamecube owners have owned a copy of Smash Bros. Melee. If Brawl approaches that kind of success, Nintendo might make a tidy profit.
