So, it is DEFINITELY one of those days.
I recently got a promotion at work and it's awesome. They were in need of a marketing person and I like to think that marketing is one thing that comes pretty naturally to me.
As far as putting on events, pleasing the cutomers, maintaing a crowd, flyering, advertising, shaking hands and kissing babies goes.... I'd say I'm doing pretty well. But, here's the deal: I am only paid to do marketing 1 day a week. Which basically means I am on salary one day out of the week. Wednesday through Saturday I am paid $9 an hour to answer phones. For those who don't know, there is SO much more to marketing than just hosting events. You are in charge of the entire advertising budget. It is your job to figure out where the money is coming from and where it's going. It is your job to be in touch with all advertising reps at all times. It is your job to keep up with all updates: Website, Facebook, Newspaper, Social Networking, Text club, etc. It is your job to decide who gets sponsored and who doesn't. It is your job to talk to the hundreds of people that want you to sponsor this event or that.
This wouldn't be so bad.... IF YOU WERE FULL TIME AND BEING PAID SALARY...which I am NOT. I want to do everything that I can for my boss and I want him to be very confident in my work...but damn, I want to tell him, "Look, if you're going to keep working me like this- you NEED to put on salary. I don't know how you expect me to motivated to do a lot for you when you're only paying me $9/hour. I also don't know how you expect me to get anything done while I'm sitting at a fucking desk answering phones."
I forgot to mention that I didn't go to school for marketing. I don't have a degree from any college...let alone a degree in marketing. But, my boss expects me to know everything that a marketing student would. I don't, obviously. Everything I know about marketing, I learned on my own. So, when I am expected to not only keep up with but take complete charge of situations that I have never even heard of...it's a little taxing.
I'm tryin', man.
