The Bunya Mountains

Mar 14, 2011 22:30

So, last Thursday I went to the Bunya Mountains with the Gin Club. It was BLISSFUL, except for Friday night when we found out about Japan. That was completely horrifying. And still is.

Back to the bliss:

The drive out there was nice, moving back through the Darling Downs into the Granite Belt which always feels like home country for me. Dirt and gravel roads are always... fun. We stopped at Nanango, apparently the fourth oldest town in Queensland and I visited the bathroom and immediately declared Nanangans AWESOME:

Sorry for the blur, I had it on the wrong setting and there was a queue.

Once up on the Mountains there were views. OMG there were views!

Then we went to the little house on the hillside:

$30 a night between 6 people. Hell yes it was worth it. Our neighbours (wallabies):

Chillin':

These shots were taken off our verandah. Oh yeah.

In the forest, there were cool trees and weird stuff.

Then we went on a horseyride with a real character to have billy tea and damper around the campfire in the forest. He definitely knew his stuff about the history of the region and it was a lovely time. Haven't been around a campfire in a long time. Also the pine sticking out of his head is a bunya nut pine. The "nuts" are freaking ginormous and if one fell on your head, you'd probably die.

Hard to get a good shot of fire. Had to make it dark. Those little things that sort of look like potatoes under the billy are actually bunya nuts on sticks being roasted. They were good. Relatively bland but nommy enough. I totally get why people from all over came to this region for big festivals!

I spent the rest of friday reading Connie Willis' Blackout. It was nice, lounging in the quiet and just totally destressing. Highly recommended.

Saturday we packed up to head back to Brisbane and went out via Toowoomba. We had the excuse of tripping around the countryside because Awesome Landlady's sister is over from England, so we were showing her the region. We went to have a lovely picnic lunch at Picnic Point. You can see why I was so WTF? over the flash flooding since it's on a bloody mountain!

And in Toowoomba, the Bible Belt city of Queensland, this was the grafitti that ended the trip!

It's a bit blurry but I'd like to know what Lucifer and Gabriel are greater than? Curious about the rest of the equation!
