The Big Wet: Day 2

Jan 12, 2011 21:05

Happily, it stopped raining. Which means that Enoggera Creek hasn't risen and cut me off. Which is strange given that usually it's not the rest of Brisbane cut off, but us. There was sun! And briefly the humidity was really gross this morning (possibly because we were unloading carloads of family-of-aweseome-landady's belongings), but sun! SUN!

UQ has started flooding, which somehow is more upsetting to me than the CBD getting hit, even with Oxley's heading off down the river.

Aerial footage is surreal. Crikey has a breakdown of what's happened today, including a great picture of Kevvie helping out (scroll down for other pics of the CBD etc). Anna Bligh has just started trending worldwide on twitter and it's well deserved today.

Here's a good picture of the State Library as usual and this morning.

I'm still fine where I am and should be pending the peak of the floods tomorrow arvo. There are people who have lost absolutely everything but excepting the 12 confirmed dead with 50 missing from the flash flooding from Toowoomba and in the Lockyer, there's not been any fatalities since Monday yet. This may change overnight if anyone's been silly enough to stay in at risk suburbs - there'll be a surge from the King tides about 4 AM tomorrow.

The mozzies are going to be epic, as will the smell be once the waters go down. Excepting further flash flooding (be careful in Victoria and northern Tassie, people!!) it's all waiting and clean up and disease issues from here. I hope. Please.

If you can donate: Queensland flood relief fund. 75% of the state has been hit with catastrophe - homes, crops, livestock, pets, friends and families, mining. Northern NSW is getting it too. Basically, the east coast of the country is copping it bad. Our economy, which was doing so well dammit is about to be hit hard too. It's all a bit depressing. Yet, we'll get through it. Generally, people are being awesome. Ok, yeah, there's debris and snakes and a saltie in Gympie and a bloody bull shark in a flooded street in Goodna, but otherwise, we're getting through.

Stay safe.

:)
