(no subject)

Very upset at the news of the fire at the Cutty Sark which Ali phoned to tell me about this morning. We visited the ship last October, in the last week before it closed for major restoration.

Even though a large part of the ship and its contents had been removed as part of the restoration project, materials and craftsmanship will have been lost which can't be replaced. As the great grandson of one of the captains said on News 24, it's now a reconstruction project, rather than a restoration.

On a personal note, I have so many childhood memories of the Cutty Sark, it feels like losing a family member.

I thought Tessa Jowell spoke well on News 24, however, she seemed quite tearful at the end. I just hope she puts the government's money where her mouth is.

Was somewhat soothed at lunchtime by looking at the exhibition of early Kentish jewellery which has been temporarily collected together from museums all over England.

And I can't work out why I can't make links work here.
