Chapter Seventeen

Abelardo leaned back against the deck railing, a bottle of beer in one hand as he watched Jensen with wary eyes.  Jensen was careful not to pay too much attention to Abelardo, instead spending most of his time sitting on top of the picnic table behind Mario’s dilapidated rental house, humming lowly to the tejano music blasting from the stereo and laughing at Mario’s antics near the barbecue grill.

He knew that Abelardo didn’t trust him, but Jensen had time.  He had years to ingratiate himself with the other man and Jensen knew that the opportunity would arise.  It always did.  He had lifted the bottle to his lips and taken a healthy swig when silence fell over the small group.  Jensen looked up to find Jared standing on the outskirts of the yard, his eyes fixed on Jensen.  Jensen nearly swallowed his tongue in surprise, standing up quickly.

Abelardo’s eyes went from Jared to Jensen and back again.  Jensen set his beer aside and walked towards Jared.  He cast a quick look at Mario’s questioning eyes and forced himself to grin widely, to act as if everything was normal.  His heart was thudding erratically in his chest and he felt shaken to his core.  Jared’s eyes were glued to him, unerringly focused.  Jensen stepped up to Jared, swinging a friendly arm around his shoulder and ushering him over to the grill.

“Hey, Mario, I want you to meet my cousin, Jay,” Jensen said lightly.  “He’s gonna be in town for a few days.”

“Hey,” Mario smiled, quick and stilted and waved his spatula.  “Nice to meet you.”

“Hola,” Jared said lightly, allowing himself the briefest, barest glance in Mario’s direction before turning back to look at Jensen.  “Can I talk to you?”

“Come on,” Jensen said, still grinning as he loped around, leading Jared around the side of the house and out of sight of his new friends.  Jensen ‘s grip on Jared’s shoulder tightened painfully and his steps grew long and swift as he moved Jared a safe distance away from Mario’s place.

“You’re going to blow my fucking cover,” Jensen hissed between his teeth.  “Do you have any idea what the fuck that means, just how much is riding on this?”

Jared shook his head.

“I don’t know,” Jared admitted.  “I don’t care.”

The muscle in Jensen’s jaw ticked dangerously.  He took a step back, breathing in deeply.

“This is my life, Jared,” Jensen told him, reaching for a semblance of calm.  “I can’t fuck up a case.  It’s not something that I can just do and move on, do you understand.  My entire career, my whole life is riding on this.”

“I don’t want to mess up your life,” Jared said slowly.  “I won’t mess up your life.  I just…I can’t go back to the way things were, you know?  I need you to…I need you to look out for me.”

“To do what?” Jensen asked incredulously.  “To play kinky sex games?  That’s what you need?  You can get that on any corner in any fucking city in this country, you don’t need me for that.”

Jared swallowed visibly, eyes unwavering as they focused on him.

“I love you,” Jared said quietly and Jensen felt everything in him seize up and tighten in total bliss.  He bowed his head and stood for several lingering moments.

“Jared,” Jensen said lowly.

“And you love me,” Jared went on, stubbornly.  “And I would do anything…anything to go back to what we had.”

Jensen blinked back the tears that scratched at the back of his eyes.  He looked up at the intent expression on Jared’s face.

“I don’t care why it happened,” Jared said.  “I don’t care that you were pretending to be someone else.  I know that what happened between us, everything we did there was real and honest.  You weren’t pretending when you were with me.  You made me see something inside of myself that I never even knew was there.  You woke up that side of me and it’s not…it’s not kinky sex games or whatever you want to try to compartmentalize it and make it be.  It’s…real and it’s us.  And you can lie to yourself all you want, but you can’t lie to me. “

Jared took a deep breath.

“Because I was there, Jensen and I know what happened,” Jared whispered.  “We can have that…what we had or…more than what we had because now you can be honest with yourself about it.”

“I don’t…I’m not that way,” Jensen struggled for the words.  “I’ve never been…dominant.  That’s not who I am.”

Jared smirked slightly.

“You are, too,” Jared said.

Jensen opened his mouth to protest but caught sight of Abelardo on Mario’s front porch.  Jensen stepped back.

“I’m not going away,” Jared said as Jensen moved away from him.
